well, everyone is telling me that my cat is bad and needs to be replaced. My accord makes this weird rattle sound during 2500 rpm and its real annoying. anyone know where to purchase one? i cant see to find one for a 98 av6 and hparts is done right now..does it matter if i purchase an OEM one? or a aftermarket one that is up to OEM standards? thank you

I would say it would be safer if you went with a Honda converter, and while they (Honda) are changing it they could probably diagnose the real problem if any.

CATALYTIC CONVERTER, Accord, 6 Cylinder, Federal 98-99 $443.23
CATALYTIC CONVERTER, Accord, 6 Cylinder, California 98-99 $487.33

Reliability?
I don't know if you would want to risk with those eBay cats. Those cost less than $50 the last time I checked. And if you want the name brand cats, they would probably cost more than the Honda cats, but also higher performance possibly.

u said rattling, is it only at 2500rpm?
might be the heat sheild for the cat that is rattling.

why dont u try performance peddler , he sells cats , he is the guy that did the huge magnaflow groupbuy some months back , he has some hi flow cats for under 100 and they are also from magnaflow

I might be wrong but the main problem with aftermarket cat is you cannot integrate an O2 sensor inside of it, making the check engine like always on, well most of them anyways, the ones that can include Random Tech, and i forgot the names of some other ones. Some say random doens't increase hp, some says it does. But if you're goina replace your cat anyways, you might as well give it a go.

hmm....i would like to have the how flow cats and etc, but i dont want the CEL on..for some reason if a light like the CEL is on, it just annoys the crap out of me. hmm..can i take off the heat shield? or it it necessary to leave it on..

My dealer diagnosed me car a while back, says my cat is almost done pretty much, that was over 5k miles ago, im still driving with it, cause it cost too much for something that i dont nned. they dont do sniff tests in my county, anyway, mine doesnt rattle at all. i think you shoul do what dude said and check the plate covering it.
as for the CEL i got used to it, now im thinkin about getting a race cat for less, because im already used to having it on.

April 18th, 2004, 10:11 PM
Werd, I got the same situation as the previous poster. No codes were presented and the dude told me something about O2 or something so I am guessing its my Cat, after all my car was used and the mileage was at 119,000 when I bought it.

yeah dawg, i bought mine with 108k, and the CEL was on, dude thought it was the intake though, anyway, ive been driving with it since.

do you guys have a weird sound coming from that area? it notice it more wheels are turning..
snikwad
April 19th, 2004, 01:54 PM
The only sound i hear is the engine, vrooming, and sucking, the rattle in the sunroof, and an occasioanl rattle from the rear dash, and every now and then, it creaks when im turning over uneven surface. i dont know what the stock exhaust sounds like. its mad quiet.
oh, and tire noise.
sonnieeeeboi
April 19th, 2004, 02:14 PM
i have those too, but during 2500rpm-3000rpm i have this weird cracking kind of noise coming from somewhere under the car..
snikwad
April 19th, 2004, 02:16 PM
sorry dude, i dont, and a bad at shouldnt mke no damn noise.
its the cover. drive one side up on the curb and tighten it.
Aztro
April 20th, 2004, 09:42 AM
Nope no weird noises for me.
I got things in my trunk so when I do a hard corner I hear the things from the back. When I do a hard turn I hear the front wheel on my side do that "urrrr" sound, but that's pretty much normal considering I did do a hard cornering.
The stock exhaust is silent which is the only reason I am having trouble making a decision whether to change my exhaust or not. I want my car to be silent, but I also want to show......
I just hate the ground vibrating cars that people drive around, they always make my remote alarm go off

sonnie, you dont have OBX headers by any chance do you? What makes you say you need a cat besides th rattling noise?
sonnieeeeboi
April 20th, 2004, 10:15 AM
nope, no headers yet....well its because of that crackling noise and everyone that looked at it said it shoudl be the cat..but i can't really pinpoint the noise, but i do know its somewhere under the car.

April 20th, 2004, 11:48 AM
yeah the cover of the cat, tell them fools to look again.
Aztro, im gonna get a single greddy EVO, dude im buying it from says its not loud at all, and hey, what looks cooler on an accord?

April 20th, 2004, 11:52 AM
yeah check the heat shield on the cat itself, it may just be loose. I don think your cat makes noise when its bad, it hink your car just runs like poo an you get a CEL.
snikwad
April 20th, 2004, 11:56 AM
^ thats exactly what i got. and i KNOW its bad, so its gotta be the shield, or maybe even a loose bolt causeing the whole thing to vibrate like that.

When I was running a test pipe I had a muffler shop take off my cat, I was going to do some custom exhaust work and they needed a flange that would fit our werid shaped cats. So I left it with the Muffler shop for a few days. When I came back the owner was there he informed me that they have had to replace cats on the Honda Accord V6 before and they were $1200.00 bucks from Honda. At that time there were no aftermarkets available. I would be cautious with aftermarkets too because our cat is not a normal design.

Also another way to tell if your cat is bad is to look down inside of it with a flashlight, If you dont see a screen there or it is broke or has holes in it it does need to be replaced.
Also try tightening the 3 nuts in the front and 3 in the back if you are hearing an exhaust leak!.

No they took mine off for the test pipe and to make custome exhaust they wanted to have the cat to get an exact piece fitment when the Gasket truck came around it takes a special gasket muffler companies don't even stock that why he wanted it for when the supplier came. Thats how we started talking about how the thing was gold because it costs so much. I remember I even wrapped duct tape around it with my name and address before leaving it.
I also thought about buying used ones from guys who take theirs off for Hi flow cats and test pipes because if they are that expensive I could make some $$$$$$$
but I never did.

Catalytic converters is the #1 enemy of import tuning.... its so restrictive of exhaust flow that putting a straight pipe in replacement is the best mod u can ever have.... I put a straight pipe in my car and before I put in my straight pipe i ran a 16.2 with intake/exhaust..... (4cylinder) when i ran it with my intake/exhaust/straight pipe... i ran 15.9 The rattling at 2500 is most likely your heat shield that covers your catalytic converter.... catalytic converters rarely make a rattling noise inside.....only if you have a hooptey or someting like that.... last but not least.... never trust any mechanic unless its your friend.... most mechanics are shady.... Believe me im a mechanic so i would know that...

Might help out the 4's but I tried everything you could possibly do with exhaust with no noticible gain. I tried Test pipe, and open Exhaust made no difference with or without the cat 1/4 mile wise. I do think it may have helped out 120+ top ends but when I was spraying a 75 shot exhaust after the headers made no difference no matter what I did to it.

yeup i need to change my cat. 2. the car got the problem @ 86k miles and now 89k close to 90k miles. i guess i'll add it to my maintenace list. Just get the aftermarket performance 1 much cheaper. and if it doesnt pass smog after, then take it to a place that WILL pass it

I was gonna say that too...heard alot of good things fromt them, my friend know the owner and hes really cool. Dose the hi flow cat through the cel code all the time...no way to go around it?
I too have a rattle problem...took it to honda they called me and stated "you have a rattle in your cat at 1950rpm...." i asked them why it would be rattling and he said, "well the cat basically gets old and breaks down and needs to be replaced....i will be 830 to install. I asked how much the cat was and its 690. found it online for around 460....
if you check out this post you can read on another problem i had with this dealer when i went to pick up my car after they gave me that crazy price:

Just had my catalytic converter replaced. $610 for the part + $75 labor. My honda mechanic told me to use only Chevron or 76 gas. He was told by Honda that the additives in Arco, Shell and Mobil gas do more harm to the catalytic converter. He also said avoid adding any additives to your car. Take it FWIW. This may apply only to the cats in the CA cars since they are more stringent on pollutants.
