View Full Version : DIY shift boot on auto

first you need to take out the auto shifter bezel. i had to cut out a small cross bar so i could take this out fairly easy. just be careful pulling it out, because you still have to take out the lightbulb.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/sketch_o5/piececutout.jpg
then your console should look like this. see also where i have the lightbulb tucked out of the way? its the red and black wire. if you dont do this, you will see light under your ebrake handle at night.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/sketch_o5/consoleoff.jpg
now you need to attach the boot to the shifter somehow. i did this by putting a few layers of scotch tape around the bottom piece of my shift knob.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/sketch_o5/tapeonknob.jpg
then i took 2 zip ties and put them like this
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/sketch_o5/Zipslooklike1.jpg
then tightend them up at the top of the 3 layers of tape on the bottom knob piece, cut them and put a new 1 layer of tape over them so that they would stay in place.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/sketch_o5/tapearoundziptie1.jpg
then you turn the boot inside out
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/sketch_o5/insideoutboot.jpg
flip the boot upside down and put the knob in right side up
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/sketch_o5/putknobbottominboot.jpg
then you do the same thing with the zip ties as before
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/sketch_o5/Zipslooklike2.jpg
then you tighten around the boot with the knob in it. make sure that you tighten the zip tie above the zip ties on the knob piece, towards where the top of the knob will be, otherwise, the boot wont hold to the knob.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/sketch_o5/bootinside-outzipsdone.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/sketch_o5/bottomofknobinboot.jpg
now you can go put it on your car.
Sketch o5

the console piece looks like this on the underside. the red circles are where the holes on the bottom of the shift boot line up to and where you put the screws in.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/sketch_o5/consoleholes.jpg
i used 4 small wood screws that i bought from walmart, cuz when you order the boot from honda, it doesnt come with any hardware.
this is what it should look like on the underside of the console with the boot fully attached to it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/sketch_o5/screwedintoconsole.jpg
it will look like this on the topside of the console.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/sketch_o5/bootinconsole.jpg
now you put the console on and slide the boot over the shift rod
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/sketch_o5/booton.jpg
now i had to attach all the nessesary(sp?) parts for my knob to work and this is what it should look like then
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/sketch_o5/springon.jpg
now all i needed to do was screw the top part of the knob on, and here it is finished.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/sketch_o5/Finished.jpg
PARTS NEEDED
exacto blade or razor of some sort, for trimming tape and cutting off zip tie ends
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/sketch_o5/exactoblade.jpg
the boot
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/sketch_o5/insideoutboot.jpg
scotch tape
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/sketch_o5/scotchtape.jpg
4 zip ties (or only 2 if you use the bigger ones)

I was skepitcal but it looks good...why did you have to put the tap and zip ties on the base of the shifter? I dont understand that part...

i put them on there so that when i zip tied the boot to the shifter it wouldnt slip off. it just makes it stick to the shifter. IMO, it looks and works better then it would then just zip tieing it to the base with nothing for the zip tie to actually take a hold to. my shifter is all aluminum, so it would just slip right off, which is also why i put the 3 layers of tape for the zip ties on the base to grab a hold to.

While you were at it you could have cut the shifter just a little bit, which is what I plan to do...I pretty much have the same set up as you.

sorry man, im not planning on cutting my shifter. i like it just the way it is. you just need a pipe cutter and i think thats about it. i think you need to cut the little thing with the slanted top, that pushes it down to shift. thats it really, then just screw on.

its the OEM shift boot. i just went to my local honda dealer parts department, asked for a 1998 honda accord lx standard shift boot. they had to order it in for me, and it was only ~$35. if you want tho, ask for all the correct parts to connect it to the console, cuz it only comes as the boot......i think theres some kind of plate that goes there as well, idk why, it looks fine, and it come with no hardware as well, so either get that yourself, or ask them for it. i got wood screws from walmart for 83 cents.

nice, i didnt even wanna try, cuz im lazy, haha. i dont think it really matters anyway, it just attaches the 2 center console side pieces, and theyre screwed in anyway, so its not like theyre gonna move w/o it either. plus, if you need to take a side off or something......if you cut it out, you wont have to take the whole thing out, haha....another lazy idea.

Good job how much was the shift knob and where did you get it?
Sketch o5

i got it from Driver F/X, which was formally Car Parts F/X. my girlfriend got it for me for christmas, but she forgot to take off the price tag...........i think around $40 or $45......just for an aluminum knob, haha, oh well, i like it. it gets hotter then a mother f*cker in the day tho, like if ileave the windows up in a praking lot. and i usually just rest my hand on the shift knob when i drive, so its quite the surprise, haha. its the Razo knob......i think cardomain might sell them, but i dont htink theyre a cheep item. i originally had the Ractive T-style shift knob, it was similar, no buttons, but it was so big and just crappy looking (AKA Ractive) so i wanted to get rid of that piece asap, haha, so i just started talking about shift knobs around her, then i went to the car store with her one day and got a light bulb i needed and looked at it, and i said that i liked hte styl of it, and then christmas came around and i had my new knob.....i didnt know how expensive it was tho, jeeze.

heres a little update for you guys.......well, the hot summer heat has affected this, quite a few times. since this aluminium knob get soooo hot in the sun in my car, the tape stickyness gets really sticky and the tape starts to slowly slide off, for me atleast, and its cuz the knob is tapered, so your yours is straight at the place youre trying to put it on at, then you should be fine. i tried duct tape thinking it would stick better, and no, it just made a uglier mess, haha. so i went to my dads today and put it on the laythe, and cut a groove in it so it will stay up, so i guess you could say i gave my boot a lil viagra, haha. but yea, i had to actually machine my knob for this to work, but i dont regret it, itll look great from now on, and i wont have to worry about it anymore, haha.

Thats really cool I gotta say. These are for automatics right? I'm just curious, but how do you shift the car from park to something? With like the plain smooth knobs.
Heh, sorry for the thread revival.

its cool. my knob is basically a big button. the whole knob pushes down to push the pin down to allow you to shift the gear.

Has to be made directly for an automatic. Those knobs are the razo knobs which look like manual knobs, all you have to do is push the whole knob down to shift.

wow, it's an old thread, but i've been looking for this :D ... one question, is it possible to use the boot with the stock auto shifter?

i think so but it'll probably look ugly with the big knob

August 17th, 2007, 01:17 AM
lol... so for people who cut the rod and made it look like a short shifter how much did you cut the rod by? Only the black outer tube needs to be cut right? Leave all the others on the inside stock height?
Im planning on using a automatic momo shift knob =]
Also is it necessary to take out the base of the shifter, to install the boot? (The big piece that connects to the cupholders and such)
