View Full Version : DIY - Cabin Micron Air Filter Installation w/ pic

Hey I wanted to start this DIY for those who want to change the filter for our cabin re-circulating air. It cost me only 3.99 plus tax and about less than half an hour for install to do this custom change. Do this at your own risk. Good Luck to all you Do It Yourselfer's.

Step 1:
Open the glove box, and remove the 2 locking tabs (GREEN ARROW)on the both sides of the compartment. Remove the four indicated screws ((RED ARROW)and close the glove box.

http://images.cardomain.com/member_img_a/339000-339999/339482_3_full.jpg

Step 2:
Remove the right side fuse access panel. Then proceed to remove the two bottom screws indicated (one black screw, and one gold screw).

Step 3:
Remove the center access panel under the radio. After successfully removing the cover, remove the screw on the right side indicated in the picture.

http://images.cardomain.com/member_img_a/339000-339999/339482_5_full.jpg

Step 4:
Carefully pull off the panel directly below the glove compartment. Then remove the three screws under the glove box indicated in the picture

Step 5:
Now remove the three screws on the flat bar. And proceed and move the metal bar out of the way of the air filter box. Once the metal bar is out of the way, pull out the entire glove box. This allows for easy access to the filter housing.

Step 6:
Pop up the the access door to the filter housing. (There is a tab at the bottom of the door, pull it forward). Proceed and remove the bottom half of the filter first, and then the second. Try to rember that the air flow is going from right to left.

http://images.cardomain.com/member_img_a/339000-339999/339482_8_full.jpg

Step 7:
Purchase a Micron filter sheet from Target, Walmart, Home Depot or wherever. In the picture you see on the bottom the two filter cases. And on the top a brand new filter sheet. Its only 3.99 and I can do this project multiple time. Pull out the old filter from the white case. Notice how dirty it is. This is a filter after 2 years.
http://images.cardomain.com/member_img_a/339000-339999/339482_9_full.jpg

Step 8:
Cut the sheet to fit in white cases nice and tight with no gaps at the inner wall and filter. I used some masking tape to seal off the inner wall and filter so everything passes through the filter. The filter on the left is the top side. And the filter on the right shows the bottom side. Make sure the filter and the case have air flow in the same direction. Now put the new filters back in. And reverse your steps and close everything nice and snug. Turn on the AC and ENJOY THE CLEAN AIR

i would also recommend this: while u got everything open, put some weatherstrippin on ****, to prevent any future rattles

If you are talking about the plastic panel underneath the radio, then you have to stick a thin or flat object like a screwdriver, and pry it off very carefuly. I also recommend wrapping the screwdriver head with a napkin so you dont scratch the platic. Dont be afraid. Once you loosen the top half of the plastic, just use some muscle to push it down, and it will release out of the clips in the back :) be careful

Hm...I took the thin gray part (w/ 3 screws) under the filter out.

And I see two large black boxes.
One above the gray metal and one below the gray metal.

So which one is the a/c filter box and do you pull it down ?

did u remove the glove box?? it has to come out, and the a/c filter housing is the one with a long rectangular cover. Its most probably the lower one. It is the only thing with a door like I mentioned.

and you dont pull it dow, you pop the side tabs, and pull it towards you. Look at pic #6

HeavenOnAStick
June 14th, 2003, 05:50 AM
Glad to see you.

In pic #6, I am confused.
First of all, you pull the glove box out? Right now, I tried to pull the glove box out (pushing it from below to come out on the top) and it would budge but wouldn't come out. Should I try harder or am I doing it wrong?

And the filter box, I see the tab and pulled it upward, towards me but that didn't do much.

abram2001
June 14th, 2003, 05:53 AM
there is a harness attached to the left side of the glove box, make sure you remove the 4 tops screws on the glove box, and the other 3 below it. You must be forgetting one of the scres.

and you need to remove the grey bar in between the two black boxes, because the glove box is also attached to it.

HeavenOnAStick
June 14th, 2003, 06:01 AM
I need to detach the harness on the left side? I don't remember, going to check now. And I removed all the screws mentioned in the pictures.

And got the grey bar removed for now.

abram2001
June 14th, 2003, 06:06 AM
there are two gray metal bars you need to remove, and the harnes is behind the interior courtesy light on the left side of the glove box, it controlls the light, if you did everything I said, then just use a little muscle.

HeavenOnAStick
June 14th, 2003, 06:22 AM
Oh!

How the heck do you take out the harness?
I tried everything.

abram2001
August 20th, 2003, 02:57 PM
all harness remove with a squeeze tab on the side, its very easy.

while squeezing down on the tab, jiggle the harness, and pull it out the same time. That is the easiest way.

Part # 544769 (or if that doesnt work, try 80291-S84-A01 544769)

the best price I have seen is 10.71 for one filter, keep in mind you need to purchase 2 of them. Here is the link

Cool, I finally finished the project. The air smells great! I wish I used a 1.5" thick filter instead though thats the OEM size. It was a bit*h taking out the stuff, I even encountered a problem where the doors wouldn't unlock or lock properly and the right window stutered as they went up or down when controlled via drivers side. Everything worked out though and there are no problems, hey now my windows dont fog up :D

A/C time ! Already changed my totally clogged & dirty filters yesterday using this FAQ. Thanks Abram2001. :woot:

Just a reminder. Did everybody run their AC every week to keep the seals lubed and leak free? Yes, even in the winter, run it for about 10mins every week. It gets the compressor oil flowing in the system and prevents the seals from drying out.

Does it happen when you leave the car outside after its rains? If so I also get that smell. It's like a musky mildew smell that went away for a while when I had my A/C filters replaced but came back (about 6 months after I had them replaced). It does go away after running the A/C for a few minutes so it's not really a problem for me. I do need to change them again though :p .

Abram2001,
Thanks for your time and effort - I have searched the whole www :) and glad I came across youtr post !!

I 'vent started this yet - Got filters... and planning to do iot tomorrow (Sat)

Before that, I am unclear about Step 3: -
Step 3:
Remove the center access panel under the radio. After successfully removing the cover, remove the screw on the right side indicated in the picture

Do you mean - Under the CD player and stuff ?.... Please clarify..
Which part of the dash you exactly meant -

Thanks a lot!

yeah, right under the cd player you have that pocket to store thing. If you look in there, you will see a plastic cover on top that you can easily remove... then once you remove that... you will see 2 tiny black screws. just remove the screw on the right that is attached to the grey plastic.

BTW... are you DESI? lol :)

hi,
i found a site -
www.handa-accessories.com : ordered cargo-net and cabin-filters - got them - installed both.

the pollen / ac filters cost $9.50 each i.e $19 / pair. the make is honda's OEM..
cheaper by 50% compated to the local rip-off bairel honda dealer !

cheaper than the local dealer - and went for it.
chk out the prices... also interestingly most of the accessories are posted with original honda factory install instructions..

I replaced my cabin filter over the weekend and i also had the same problem. There should be 2 star head screws on the metal bar;one on each side. I removed them using some extra force and they finally turned and the bar was removed easily.I suggest you apply some extra force or use a large star head screwdriver to loosen them up.Hope this helps

Nope, my 99 AV6 has the same philips-head screws your 2002 AV6 has for the lower dash panels.

I broke the lower panel on mine too because the instructions didn't show the screw hidden behind the middle lower panel. The instructions were also for the removing the drivers side lower panel so I ended up breaking the wrong panel anyways  . Way back then I didn't know where the filter box was located so I gave up and had the dealership do it :p .

What kills me is how difficult Honda made it to change the filters on these cars

A lot of other cars have a niftly little door inside the glove box that gives you access to the filters. Turn a few clips, open the door, pop out the filters, put in the new ones, close the door, lock the clips. That's it, filters changed.

Stupid Honda

It's that easy on the 7th gen models. Unhinge the glove box arm which opens it more. Pop off the little cover under the glove box and pull out the filter. Put a new one in and reassemble. No tools needed. Our large glove box probably forced them to put the filter box that far under the dash. I'd change it more often with a cheaper filter if changing it was as easy as the 7th gen Accord.

You had leaves in your filter box! I didn't think leaves could get past the vent grill where the windshield wipers are :confuse2: . Were they wet or dry leaves (I’m guessing wet)?

Most were dried up at the time but whenever it rained I would get a musty smell when I turned on the ac/heat until they dried out. They were small but there was a whole lot of them. Really nasty stuff.

No wonder it was so bad. Our manual says to change them every year or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first.

That was the only time I changed it personally but I might have been done before by the dealer when I took it in for service. Judging by the way it looked... it was the first time. Car has 41k on it.

On a side note... I bought my replacement filters from Hardtopguy for real cheap and they even came with instructions (with pictures) so if you are looking to do this give Hardtopguy a call cause the dealer wanted way more than he is charging.

Here guys, check this out, thats the part we need from Purolator, and if you look at the bottom on the red tabs, there is one that says installation, click on it, and it'll show you how to install it.

Let's all give Honda a round of applause for making this maintenance entirely too difficult to perform. I changed my filters this past week, too. $21.40 shipped off of ebay. They came with some good instructions too. If you guys want, I can scan the instructions and post, just let me know.

I don't mind taking the glove box out. But in order to do that, we have to remove 1/2 of the dash... In newer models, most of the glove boxes come with a door you can just pop up and replace the filters in 10 minutes tops.

I just changed mine in my Accord and 2001 Highlander. First I did the Highlander. Open glove compartment, then push on both sides of glove compartment to lower it down and give acess to behind the glove compartment. Next reach in, open filter lid and slide out filter ( 1 large filter). Put new filter in, replace lid, squezze the sides of glove compartment and close glove compartment. It took approx. 60 seconds or less and required NO tools. Accord required screwdriver, socket and ratchet, removal of 2 metal brackets, glove compartment, and 3 plastic covers. I took off approx. 15-20 screws w/ about 4-5 different styles. Took 20 minutes approx. to complete and had 2 small filters. Can anyone see the problem here?

So, I'm sitting in the Accord right now, staring at the glove box. Everything else went just fine then I got to the glove box and it won't come out! HELP?!

BTW. This is in a 2002 Accord EXV6, if that's important.

Thank you!!! :)

I did. I looked over various instructions and double checked everything. It feels like it's stuck on something. Are there clips that attach the glove compartment other then than the 4 screws?

you have to squeze the sides in some there are two pieces that stick out from the box to hold the door arms from opening too much. try one side then the other instead of both at the same time

took a very long time but finally got it finished after a couple scrapes and cuts. I wonder if this was the first time they've ever gotten replaced. My car is a 2000 with about 94,500 miles on it. BTW I ended up with extra screws in the end. I guess i forgot to put back some of what seemed like 20+ screws. Anyways here are the results. This should encourage all you guys to change your cabin filters!

i didnt have 20 left. I had about 4 or 5. I meant i removed roughly 20 screws. I was amazed at how many had to come off. I can see why the dealer charges so much after doing it myself. both filters that came out look disgusting.

To be honest I'm not sure. I bought Micron Air filters, I think Micron Air may be the OE supplier?

EDIT: Seems like Honda does make the cabin filters, too: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HONDA-GENUINE-CABIN-FILTERS-2-98-02-ACCORD_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33659QQihZ014QQi temZ330074401715QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V

Guys, i have a major problem. You know when you open the glove box, there are two black clips you have to pry out to reveal two screws? One of the screw keeps on spinning, it won't unscrew. any idea or advice? It on the left side. Any advice? I can't even get it off!! I could drill it, but i need that screw.

I heard that you can use superglue on the tip of the screw driver, but doesn't that just damage the screwdriver? My screw driver are brand new.

mrgamers
August 2nd, 2008, 09:16 PM
just to clarify, when i said the screw keeps spinning, it keeps spinning in place. no, the screw are NOT stripped by any means. Like it keeps turning counterclock wise but won't unscrew.

Nittanys1
August 3rd, 2008, 07:11 AM
try pulling out on that part of the glove box, what prob is happening is that the screw is too far in that it can't grab onto something to screw out. if that doesn't work you can try the superglue. don't worry about it messing up your screw driver because its not going to do anything. a few scratches on it only gives it character!

mrgamers
August 5th, 2008, 11:44 AM
that true. if i superglue the screw driver and the screw together, how do i ummm unglue the screw and the screw driver?

Nittanys1
August 5th, 2008, 11:46 AM
its not going to permanently bond them...its just glue. If you wish just leave it on there and then when you are putting things back together just screw it back in and snap it off the screwdriver.

mrgamers
August 6th, 2008, 02:17 PM
it doesn't work. i tried plier, i tried superglue. that darn screw won't come out. i am very tempted at this point to drill it out, but i don't want to. ...grr. any advice?

take a flat head and use it to pry out the screw as ur unscrewing the screw. don't give up u can beat that screw!
