Code P0401

I got this error code when i went to Autozone today for my check engine light. They said, it was insuffient EGR Flow. And I also found a website that, we should have had a recall for this. Recall reference number 99-038. I could not get any more information. Does anyone have clue, that it is a recall or the website for all of our recall. Thanks alot.

All the info that I have on this is at home & I'm at work. When I get home I'll try to find it for you.

I can tell you that it is a valid TSB (Technical Service Bulletin). I have a copy of the instructions straight from a Honda dealer. I did the fix myself. I just had the dealer send me the whole kit w/ all needed parts. (I was overseas at the time & Honda UK wouldn't work on my car.) What has to be done is this (simplified):

1. Disconnect Intake and hoses from Intake Manifold.
2. Remove Throttle Body from Intake Manifold
3. Remove Intake Manifold.
4. Drill out EGR port to accomodate stainless steel sleeve.
5. Insert a stainless steel sleeve (included in kit).
6. Remove and replace EGR Valve & Gasket (included in kit)
7. Re-install Intake Manifold.
8. Re-install Throttle Body (new gasket in kit)
9. Reconnect Intake and all hoses.
10. Clear Fault Code (I had a friend with an OBDII scanner tool)

Does this TSB apply to all 6th gens?

I have a 99 V6 and am worried that it might happen to my car. But maybe my car already has this done when the least owner had it.

Is there a simple way for me to check this without taking all of that apart ?

I'm not sure. I'll have to check the paper I have at home. I'll let you know, though.

You want Service Bulletin 99-085 (Oct. 26 2001) as it replaces 99-038. It covers clogged EGR valves with MIL P0401 or P1491 on all 1998-2000 V6 Accords and some 2001 V6 Accords for 8 years or 80,000 miles.

2001 V6 Accords
4door 1HGCG1...1A000001 - 1HGCG1...1A058654
2door 1HGCG2...1A000001 - 1HGCG2...1A023388

There is no way to check to see if this fix is installed without removing your intake manifold.

No problem, here's some more info.....

The problem can be detected by fault code P0401 (insufficient EGR flow) or P1491 (insufficient EGR lift)

These are the cars the TSB applies to:

1998-00 Accord V6 -
ALL

2001 Accord V6 -
4-door from vin # 1HGCG1...1A000001 thru 1HGCG1...1A058564

2-door from vin # 1HGCG2...1A000001 thru 1HGCG2...1A023388

It is covered under a warranty extension of 8 years / 80,000mi

"Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Service Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work."

If anyone needs more info or instructions I can scan them & e-mail them to you. They include all part numbers and repair procedures. That is IF you want to do this on your own.

EDIT: 99%StockAV6 posted while I was typing....OOPS

i just got that code....I called honda and they said they will fix this problem if it's clogged...
I called the dealership and they said.. if it's clogged, they'll waive the computer link ($80) andfix it for free (from American Honda)

They the guy said, if it needs to be replaced, they are gonna charge me the computer link ($80) plus labor and parts...

I got the same P0401 code, but i'm worried, about playing this russian roulette... cause if it needs to be replaced it's gonna hit me $200... but if it's just clogged i dont pay a thing...

Should I just goto a regular mechanic and get this replaced? I know the mechanic will be alot cheaper than the damn dealership...
oh yeah...i have a 98accord and 67k.. my warranty expired at 60k

It would be stupid not to go to the dealer. You have the code that is all that is required of the repair.

"In some areas of the U.S., certain basic chemical properties of gasoline (regardless of brand) may cause the intake manifold EGR port to clog or the EGR valve to fail."

"To be eligible for coverage under this extended warranty, the MIL must be on with of the above DTCs stored."

Edit: The service bulletin above is the same one I have.
