Busted Antenna

Hi Does anyone know how fix a busted radio antenna...
when i turn the radio on it goes up than just stops half way and makes a huge grinding sound...
i'd rather just remove or at least stop it from going up when i turn my radio on...
any suggestions?

thanx in advance...

'96-97 had windshield antennas....lucky bastards
but like mastadulog said you could get a windshield antenna,
i think i remember a long time ago someone somewhere
saying you could buy one from radio shack and mount it
wherever you want. that way you could just shave off the old
external one

yeup. Oh how i love my 97. no need to worry abt antenna going up n down.
To fix the grinding problem u'd have to go outside ur car EVERYTIME u turn radio on or off and kinda twist it left <->rite so that the antena can go all the way up or down.

:dusts off the ol' haynes manual:

12-7

Antenna - removal and installation

open the trunk lid or liftgate and remove the left side inner trim panel for access to the antenna assembly.
trace the lead from the antenna down to the connector and unplug it. (caution: pull on metal terminals when separating this connector. do not pull on the cable or damage to the cable may occur)
remove the locknut, spacer and rubber washer
turn on the radio. as the antenna extends, withdraw it and the antenna drive cable from the fender
carefully insert the cable of the new antenna into the hole with the drive teeth facing towards the vehicle. you can verify that the drive teeth are properly engaged with the antenna motor drive gear by carefully moving the cable up and down
clean the antenna housing threads and insert the antenna into the housing. install the bushing, spacer and locknut. secure the locknut securely.
verify the antenna fully extends and retracts when the stereo is turned off and on respectivly. is the antenna sticks, the locknut may be over-tightened. loosen it until the antenna can move up and down freely.
hmm too bad i didnt see that last line until the end, maybe that is your problem. try loosening the locknut first

also check your fuse boxes, there maybe a fuse to pull to disable it.
