disappointed in silverstar turn signal: went APC

I went to the local auto parts store and picked up a set of SilverStar 1157's today and here's the story in pictures...

The stock bulb next to the package:

The bulbs, side by side. The silverstar has a lot of amber showing:

The stock signal, very amber:

Silverstar installed. Amber and blue! Yuck!

So I will be taking these back and looking for an alternative. I heard about some titanium ones on this forum somewhere.

Bummer.

BTW, here is the "on" comparison. This doesn't affect my decision to return them.

Stock lit:

I've got the APC Titanium bulbs.... and they are only silver (no blue or amber) when not lit, and amber when lit. I recommend them. Definately not like the bulbs you got. $6 each at Pep Boys. I'm still looking for the same type bulb for the rear turn signals (found them online, but don't like having to pay $6 shipping for a $5 bulb).

Ya. I really want the clear look, but the el cheapo way.

And no, I don't have a big azz ugly wing. Just a n oem rear spoiler.

But it's a running joke between me and a friend.

He just bought a Mazdaspeed Protege and was previously looking at SRT-4, etc. They all had these, what I would consider, HUGE, (or very prominant) wings on them. So I constantly rib him about it until he made that sig for me. He also made me one without a wing but I thought this one is funny.

BTW, his MSP is cool. Lot of bang for the buck.

Let him know that it's "the", not "teh", and the sig is complete! I was hoping you didn' thave that wing. You can't tell by the picture you have posted, the back is cut off to show the deer!

Should have let it remain a mystery.

Ok. I went out and got an APC Titanium bulb and I think I'm happy. They only had one so I gotta do some calling tomorrow to find it's bro.

I put it in and it looks good. I'll get a pic up with the Titanium in one side and stock in the other tomorrow. The Titanium is a deeper amber color. Maybe slightly not as bright.

well from an early post about it. people were complaining about the light output from the titanium on. not as bright as the stock. just to point that out for you.

btw great mod for the clear corner. look sweet. alot better than cracking the headlight to take it out.

Hmm there shouldn't be any cracking. Maybe that's where you went wrong?

Some people didn't like it.

I did. I think they are great.... just the look I was looking for. The slightly diminshed light output has never bothered me.... I believe they are plenty visible at all times.

Just from the one side I have installed, I think the difference is minimal. I like it, too.

Pics coming.

Ok. Here are some day pics to show the 'clear' effect.
This definitely works for me.

I will get some night pics up to show the difference in hue and output.

Closeup of APC Titanium 1157 Amber

Now stock

Further away APC. I must say this was the desired effect.

So there you have it. The 'cleared' look for about twenty bucks.
$12 for the bulbs and $5 for the chrome tape (over the reflectors).

No baking, no cleanup.

i was referring to the other alternative of clearing out the orange piece. which was to open up the headligh housing and removing the orange strip.

i know the chrome sheet is just glue on to the outside.

that's all.

"SilverStar® Signal Lighting features the latest breakthrough in European Diadem™ interference coating technology to produce a signal lamp that is irredescent blue when unlit and legal amber when lit. "

got that from the slyvania site..

I probably wouldn't have minded only blue but it was amber and blue when unlit...

As opposed to the APC Titanium here...

Here is the 'lit' APC versus stock for output comparison.
(APC on the left of the picture)

And I am done.

Are there pure white bulbs available even when lit? I would like to convert my turn signals to white if I can.

Pretty sure the answer is yes. I don't know if it's legal or not.

I've had people do double takes and when they find out it's tape they are impressed. Happened just today.

Do you know if you can get the APC bulbs for the rear turn signals?

Wont be as bright since the back lights are white and they just look red in cuz the plastic... Now for the front the LED front ones may be brighter,

In the end it depends how much you spend for how well of a LED bulb... The good ones cost $50+ a pair...
