6th gen led tails (for sale now)

ok cant hold it any long and not posting it here
started 6th gen led tail light project(yes i know, my 7th gen tails are not done yet). here are results so far

parts (somebody asked me about price on this)
leds $120
clear tails $50
oem tails ~$50(only outer pieces)
controller boards ~$30-50 in parts
pcb board $10
wires ~ free(have it or made it from computer power cables)

~250-$280 total for parts

what you thought it was $50 job?

clear lenses

i think ill do turn signal and backup light so if somebody wants to be get cf trunk without center they can still have legal requirements for tails.
Board would be painted red/silver

comments are welcome

ok i wana see if somebody gona be intrested in this so i can make it to customers specs.
asking $500

hmmmmm... my current work in progress good luck with yours.

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...s/IMG_0181.jpg

been working on it on and off for months going through trail and error, pita

you'll probably finish yours before i ever get around to finishing mine

gonna use stock lenses like me or swap em out for clear ones and then red tint them? too bad 6gen coupe tail lenses are not multi piece like your 7th gen ones. god you have it easy with the 7th gen. lol. dont try and sand the lense inside, absolutley not worth the effort, spent so much time trying it and it just wouldnt go away completley. hence the reason im leave the lenses alone now.

not gona sand them. gona leaave as is. i might steal you idea with led tubes, but gona pack them closer, and might do 2 thick rows 2 rows packed, then space and another row. dont wana use top space, just wana do bottom and have that part as turn, brake and running light with Daves optidrive
i might take off that strip thats behind reflective part on bottom. was it easy to take off?
and wana do center one too with foglights options

and no this tails are easier to do since they are smaller, who cares about clear lenses. its pita with my 7th gen, which have to be done before this will start

where you PWMs by the way?

that strip behind the reflector was a pain for me, i had to heat it a lot and pull really hard. you'll then end up with a little ridge in that area and will have to dremel it down a bit.

i ditched the tube ideas because it was impractical and didnt fully achieve the look i was going for. and it was more work ontop of what i was already doing. i was going to use the tube idea if i was gonna use the clear red tinted lenses but i scrapped that idea because the altezzas i bought wheren't actually clear... long story so i lost that money and just played it cheap and stuck with the stock housing.

i think the 2 thick bars would look great, after seeing that one NSX tail retro on hidplanet i wanted to switch too but this is already my 2nd version, i totally ditched the first version i had with only 32 leds, this new version has 64 inthe bottom and like 40 up top. i achieved the "dim" and bright using a 9v and 12v sharp regulators. i might ditch the 12v reg for teh "bright" light to get a great diferentiation between the running lights and full brake lights.

do you know how many amps the stock blbs draw? dont want to run into a current shortage like that NSX guy. i dont even know how many amps the stock lights draw.

how do you plan on securing the perf board to the housing? im using the glazier points and it works okay.

haha i dont have a thread yet because of how slow i work, the thread would fall into the archieves before i finish, lol. and it was kind of a secret till now, thought i'd chime in and give my 2 cents. and yes, im doing the center as well... gonna do it a little drifferent. im gonna run red leds all the way over the reverse light area as well. then im gonna cram some white cree p4s in the spaces between the reds for the reverse lights. and im not going to have a "dim" for the turn signal area like the stock tails have, im just gonna have them either be full on or full off. so hopefully at night, i'll have the look of having 2 super long and large bars across the back and when i signal, the corner come on at full brightness.

also an fyi, for the lower corner brake lights, i angled all my leds inward because once mounted on the car, if the leds were mounted normally, they'd shine outward and i personally want my brake lights to be focused primarily straight back. and for the blinkers, i left them mounted normally so they're focused outward which is who the blinkers are intended for.

Stock id say about 2 amps or less. Check what fuse it has for lights(21W/12 or 14V is less then 2 amps,

U shuld be fine with ur setup.

My 2 rows on 7th gen project draw 1.8 amps and that's 120 led2.7V at 60mA

Just checked design and I can fit about 60 leds in lower row and about same in top row. So that's 110-120 leds in lower portion of the light. So ill be fine with amps as well. Are u ever on aim?

V1(one i will probably make, maybe there will be minor details

V2(just another design, dont want to do it couse everybody has it like this and it just would look like led bulb behind it instead of custom leds)

They'd turn out so much nicer if you didn't use the OEM lenses. They distort the output tremendously.

from distance it will look like strip of lights anyway so it doesnt matter what lenses they will be. you will see.

but then again, i can only make the boards and put them in any lights

i still dont know how led will behave behind that reflective strip. or i should just make it all 3 strips on top. but then it will not be strips. i dont know. i can still change the design and move whole board up so there will be 2 strips in bottom section and one strip in top section.

I'm speaking from experience, I don't need to wait & see.

But nice job so far, these should be more affordable than the nicer LED taillights around the community so hopefully you should have quite a few customers once you've completed this.

will have to angle leds down as well on one side of led but dont think ill need to do any angling as far as back goes since its 60degree leds and back tails almost flat anyway
