Angry XM Radio

I just purchased XM today and got it installed and i dont care for it at all. I called and got it activated and 5 hr's later i still do not have all of the station's yet and my regular radio stations sound better then XM does. It's the Alpine unit i have hooked up to my 9807. And it takes a couple of seconds for the music to play when i change the station's. Is this because it still hasnt fully downloaded all the stations or what?? Will the quality get better? I have a system and about 3 people told me that it would sound good on it but it doesnt really. Anyone else having this problem or is it just me? Thanks for all of your help!

i have xm in my jeep and i love it. it took about 45 mins to download. make sure you keep the car in your driveway with a clear view to the sky with no tall mountains or buildings and leave it on station 1 . periodically toggle thru until you have them all. i think i get about 180 stations. the fm modulator is a device that turns the xm signal into a fm signal then you turn your radio to a certain channel to hear the xm

I did leave it on channel 1 and i finally got all the stations. But it sounds muffled and and my system doesnt hit like it does with a CD. should it? And i don't have to put my radio on an FM station, i just push the source button on my alpine receiver, it's a Cda 9807.

sounds like something could be wrong, but I am not sure what your not getting...

I have had my pioneer dedicated since they first came out 2 or 3 years ago, I have no gripes with the sound quality at all....just like any preprogramed source you get some cutoff on the top and bottom to compensate for all kinds of playback, but I am not sure what you think you are not getting

also, what stations are you experiancing this on. XM dosnet really come out and say it, but I sold it for 2 years and I know that they do not devote equal bandwith to each station, based on popularity, so like 20 on 20 will get full bandwith, but say sunny wont....its kinda noticeable at higher volumes... I dont know **** about alpine, but I know other people who have had them and have no complaints. make sure that you re-adjust your eq, perhaps your deck allows differnet settings for each source, and see if you have a source level adjustment.

ok, my media expander is off and JGold you are right with some of the stations sounding better then others. maybe its just because i'm so used to listening to cd's all the time and i just got used to how good they sound. And as for the EQ on that head unit i have no idea really where to begin messing with that, because im very stupid when it comes to audio equipment so i will probably call the shop where i got it installed and have them look at it since they sale alpine there and stuff.

well the thing is, it might be beneficial to have it on...I was just suggesting to toggle it around before deciding that it was kaput....

What i think youre hearing are the artifacts of a 128k sampling rate.
your cds and fm radio are not sampled at 128k thats why they sound better. (basically boils down to how much music data they can send to your car, ie bandwidth)
and the stations are also not setup the same, they run at different levels, some are running at -3 some at 0. not to mention each station is shaping their own sound (eq-ing), added onto the fact that the more recent music is just not as good quality as what you will find on 4,5,6,7 and maybe channel 8.
in my personal opinion if your a finiky audio person you shouldnt get XM for the quality of music (at least not right now) you should get it for the SELECTION and VARIETY.

hope that^^^ makes sense

you think its lower channels, I figuered and thoguht I was told it was popularity....like listen to the news channels, you can almost hear the loss (the water in a pipe sound swirl)....but its not present on the music stations...

I dunno dude, my Pioneer dedicated reciever sounds great, on all channels, period. I sorry you have problems, but it seems that the Pionner stuff has the best quality for dedicated source.
