EBC green COMPLETE review

This thread was on the Av6.com, now I'll bring it back.
Like the title say, it's a complete review.

I will try to keep each picture's file size under 30k, hope people with modem can view this information, too

background information:
11/6/02 24,944 miles -- change front brake pad at dealer. original pad go wear out due the tracking event I participate. new pad is honda's pad.

4/3/03 30,800 miles -- rear pad got worn out, so I decide to change to aftermarket pad for a 4 corners. aim to improve fade resistance. EBC green stuff installed.

Installation: by shop. wheel, alignment, brake specialist.

Cost: total $236.10 include $60 for tire changed. original quote for $60-$80 pad changes on all corner, but mechanic claim it turn out to be hard. complicated, I wasn't satisfy with the price.

the job: resurface rotor, change pads

Here's pic at 180 miles after installation.

At 700 miles, I did a wash, and here's the pic after 150 miles.

notic the red arrow. I clean up the surface with my finger for comparison.

the pic are all front wheel.

since the day I have brake pad installed, I have to wash my rim EVERY week. none stop. Every Friday. I'm going to wash my rim again now. and gonna take some pic too. I will have more update tonight or tomorrow.

Comparison with stock pad:
With stock pad, my rim will remain clean for the first week, even if it rains. I wash my rim once a month if I have time, and if I have too much time, I'll wash it every 3 weeks. With EBC brake pad, does will appear within 50 miles of driving. Typically, one trip out is all it takes to have dust appear on the rim. The dust EBC creates are not as little as the stock pad. I would say the stock pad create dust at the size of sand or smaller. EBC creates dust/partical at the size of a 0.5mm pencil lead. That's a big difference in size, and is the reason why EBC dust is so noticeable.

Problem that has occured:
--Brake perform differently after ABS kick in. I hardly step brake hard enough that the ABS need to kick in. So far, with EBC, probalby less than 5 times. During the time ABS kick in, everything performance normally, but the braking power after that particular stop become noticeably different. When applying break to slow the car down, I can feel the brake rotor are not smooth, and braking power are not apply evenly as rotor rotate. Similar to pulsation. A visiual inspection will notice a circular line on the rotor. I check it with my finger nail, but I con't tell if it is groove or build up. I believe those are buildup particle, because it disappear after 3 weeks of driving. So far, this has happen twice.
--Brake from 90mph, steering wheel shake "noticeably". (90mph in safe condition, and I hardly go over 70mph) This only happened once. If I'm going at 90mph and try to slow down the car by applying brake lightly, everything feel normal. But one time, I applie brake a bit harder to slow the car to 60mph quicker, and the steering wheel shake very noticeably. The movement was so noticeable that if my hand was not on the steering wheel, the car will not remain in a straight line, but will not steer to one side or another, because it shake left and right at a fast speed.
--braking performance is hard to predict The stock pad will perform quite equally in normal condition. But EBC does not. Sometime, the brake kick in sooner (feel like there's more friction), sometime it just take more brake travel to have the same braking power. so, in some sense, it's quite scary. But then if you brake all the way, the car will stop.

The pad now has 2000 miles on it. And was washed a week ago. was driving around 200 miles. with 50% on freeway, and 50% local.

The arrow point the the clean surface

I did not take any pic for the rear, because it's not as dirty, and does not show up on the pic that well. The rear has less dust, but still more than the stock pad.

Well I had ebc greens on my integra before. They are the worst pads I have ever used IMO and the dust is horrible.

Get the Nissin pads either OEM or the AEMs.. both are great!

BTW good write up and pics!

Doesn't Nissin makes pad for both Honda and AEM?

P.S. Love the SSR rims Accord123. It got the SiFuLao's approval

I guess the EBC pads are not that much better. I have the AEM/Nissin pads and they create a hell of a lot of dust. I didn't wash my car for 4 months and my C2 Evo's went from silver to bronze.

Just to add couple info.
I got the pad from tirerack.com

When I had the stock pad, I wash my rim once a month or so, and even then, the rim wasn't that dirty as compare to EBC in a week.

Here are my guesses:
1) I was lucky, and had some super high quality stock pad. (not likely)
2) The shop did not install my pad right. (not likely)
3) My EBC green pad is expired. (do brake expired??)
4) I got defective green pads for a 4 corners.
5) EBC make false adviertisement.
6) EBC compare their pad with some very very low quality stock pad, and claim 80% less dust.

bottom line, as far as what I see, EBC greenstuff is making at least 3 times of dust than the stock pad I had. and that's still a understatement. I want to say 5 times, but I rather not overstated it.

I have replaced my stock pads with EBC green stuffs and they seem to work pretty well. Good stopping power from what I can tell. What is the biggest complaints about these pads? Brake dust? You'll get that with any pad, though. But what have others experienced in terms of braking performance with this pad? Thanks.

Accord123, regarding your guesses:

1. NO - see point 6.
2. Maybe
3. NO
4. NO
5. YES
6. There are no "low" or "high" quality STOCK pads, they're all the same, so NO.

EBC Green are JUNK!

Thumbs down

I have to agree with you guys about the EBC Greenstuff brake pads. I installed the front and rear pads on my RX-7 and they completely sucked. I was extremely gentle on the brakes when I first put them on and was extremely disappointed in the results from braking, and dust. At the time I had polished rims and within 5 minutes of driving they were covered with dust.

Did you obey the 250-mile break-in with the new EBC pads? That is the most common problem with folks complaining about their pads because I've heard nothing but great things about EBC from folks who have used it on their cars.

EBC brake pads have nothing on Endless Nova brake pads. you won't believe how much dust Endless Nova creates in one week of driving, rims change color from silver to black (dark gunmetal).

Yes, I did obey the 250 miles break in period.
I'm pretty sure EBC is a good pad on the performance part, but for the dust part, I'm not the first one who complain about it. Various car owners had complain about EBC's dust. If I remember correctly, one of the owner was considering to file a lawsuit about false advertisment. But as far as what i know, it never did happen.

I did autox back then, went to one track event. EBC has good stoping performance as compare to stock pad, but it was advertised that EBC reduce dust significantly. In my case, it is not true, and if you searh some other car's forum, you'll find many owners with the same problem.

I'm one of the few owners who post detail pix to illustrate the issue.

If you have high tolerance about dust, and value braking performance a lot, EBC is not a bad choice. I couldn't stand washing my rim every week.

PS. After washing the car, as soon as you drive the car out, the dust start showing on the rim. and dust are in huge dots, about 1mm-2mm size. very noitcable.
