White Lightning

Well, some of y'all knew it was coming while others may be completely shocked I went this route, but project White Lightning is complete!!

The pics and video truly do not do it justice as opposed to seeing it in person - ask Carter who has - we both needed our sunglasses on while looking at her in the sunshine haha! The pearl effect is beautiful. The way it shines, and the sheen that changes as you move around the car, is simply outstanding. I have been wanting a Pearl White coupe ever since Lexus came out with their Pearl While on their IS250 / IS350; and now I finally have it - only on the best car made known to man kind - w00t!

On with the pics!

It took me 4 hours to complete the masking. Damn being a perfectionist! o_O

She sat over night to allow the dip to really cure before I unmasked everything (besides the wheel covers, obviously ^^ lol)

Money shot! Look at that sheen on the passenger front fender (Photo taken by Carter - thanks bruddah!)

Ride's on point bro. You can't go wrong with red or white, I prefer white bc a red car gets more attention and tickets.

Paint job turned out fantastic man.

You gonna keep the same rims?

Thanks Frank!

I went white b/c I love how the lighter colors (white, silver, etc.) really show the lines of the HFP kit - just makes them look that much sportier. I didn't buy a white or red accord from the get'go though because 1) I agree about red vehicles being more prone to tickets (I know many officers) and 2) I hated the fact that you could only get a beige interior on both exterior colors! Such crap. But now I have white + black leather haha

I'm actually (locally) selling the HFP wheels right now but only if I get asking price. Otherwise, I'm keeping them.

This may be a stupid question but I noticed you didn't mask off the lights and a few other things then on the unmasking they were clean and perfect? Am I missing something or is this like a special paint?

Thank you gentlemen

Dip came from DYC (DipYourCar)
Yes, the Gunmetal Gray is also dip like the rest - I just called it "primer" because it acted as my priming color to get the first two coats of dip down for the white to bond to

I HATE dip but I came across this on your youtube earlier today and I gotta say I am in love. Came out so clean. That stuff is amazing when people take their time and do it right, like you have done. I love it!

When you dipped did you ever use the technique where they say to do like a heavy layer as the primary layer or did you just light dust it all the way?
Having some issues getting rims done well using a gun while using the thick dip technique.

Definitely like the outcome. Going to try their laquer clear coat to finish mine, try to give it a harder surface, primary color will also be carried by the clear coat so I need to do it right. How hard was it to do the pearlizer considering it sprays on more or less clear?

When I dipped my 19" HFPs I used cans not the sprayable quart/gallon PDS. According to Fonzie, you want 50-75% coverage on the first coat which is the technique that I personally used. I know others spray the first coat on very lightly - but I'm such a texture freak I'd be afraid of that causing it - not being sprayed evenly all over the surface. You can reference my pics above though to see my first coat - harder to see coverage being gunmetal gray over graphite pearl though so it may look more covered than it is

The pearlizer is definitely thinner than regular PDS - I learned that when I used it on my wheels. You really have to be careful and watch or else you'll get runs. This was the first time I sprayed Pearlizer with a gun and on the entire car - I did get a very minute run on the trunk lid and another minute one under the passenger side mirror but all in all I'd say that's pretty damn good being my first dip job haha

Good to know on the running, however I meant if after your first coat if you wen't for higher coverage than what you did on the first coat?
I'm not sure just how thick they want it applied and have had trouble with orange peel/particulates, I really need to figure out how to fully clean all the nooks in this gun as that's been my texture issue before.

I use naphta thinner to clean the gun. I took the gun apart and dumped all of the parts into the hopper filled with naphta for only a minute or two. Then remove them and dry them real good with a clean dry microfiber. Dip your microfiber towel in the hopper and clean the rest of the gun by hand, including using the needle removal tool. Fonzie has a video on YouTube specifically how they clean it at DYC.

Yes, my second and additional coats were thicker than the first. Watch a bunch of their videos to see exactly how they are spraying it. With normal PDS you can go panel by panel but with Pearlizer, Top Coat, Glossifier, etc. (all of the thinner dips) you want to run the entire length of the vehicle.

Under $500 for everything shipped

Exactly a 1/4 of what a wrap job was going to cost me and that's more permanent. This way, if I get tired of it I can dip over it or peel it off
