How do you take off the OEM shifter anyway? Just twist off or somethin?

Also can you use an aftermarket shiftknob with the OEM boot?

Yes to both questions. The OEM shift knob is screwed on, and all that's required is to turn it many times until it comes off. The OEM boot doesn't affect what shifter you finally decide to put on.

Also, if you want a shifter that is slightly lower, you can remove the hex nut on the bottom just above the boot. It will give you about a half-inch off the height. I did this little mod within the first week after I bought the car.

I took apart the shift knob and boot and didn't see any hex nut. The only one I saw that even comes close to what you're sayin is that black plastic ring between the shift knob and boot.

Could you explain more?

i have the neuspeed shortshifter. it makes shifting kinda rough when you first put it in.. but otherwise, i'd recommend it.
