just when you thought it was impossible to put a screen in the stock HU location.....

it can be done. I finally was able to get everything crammed in there, lots of finishing work to do, including paint, and wiring the stock On/Off button for the screen, but here you go, now drool

What size screen? Height, Width and Diagonal measurements please.

Oh, and how are you going to control your HVAC unit? Are you replacing the stock HU in the cubby area?

more pics

difference between EX left and LX right Climate Control circuit boards.....yet, they do the same thing

some background on the project...........

* this started out as a crackhead idea the day my car got delievered to me.
* I really didn't think this would work....I mean I knew I could 'force' it to work, but not this 'easy'
* I am getting the vents above the OEM HU scanned to get a paint code so that I can paint it to match (cool huh?)
* I found primer (which I am looking for the old can) that matches the OEM texture (although the BS rattle can paint job I did for effect covers it up...time to sand again)
* uh, the OEM HU in my car is still there...I bought a cheap 'dim' HU off of eBay to do this project...starting with an LX (thinking it would work) then realizing it ws different, had to find a EX, since the bezel from an EX will not accomidate and LX climate control circuit board (see pic above)
* I am not going to do a carputer...like I said in the beginning, this was a kinda crackhead/proof of concept idea, so I wanted one to work first, then go onto carputer
* I am using a NON touch screen 7" Lilliput screen....since I didn't know how much space I had to work with.....next time will be touch screen
* I litterally hacked most of the front bezel of the screen to squeeze into the HU bezel....I'm talking about mm here, very tight fit.
* As far as I know, the HVAC controls will in fact work
* I did desolder the HU display off to get the screen to fit between the HU bezel and the CC Circuit board.

Anymore questions, I'm here

Clean work but I cannot say that I like it. It looks... so empty around the screen.

can't really do much about it....too tight to squeeze anything around it, plus I wanted it to be plain and simple

yes, but it will require more work, since you would have to relocate the HU display somewhere else....but it would work with more work

You could sell that as a prototype I'm sure. And very nice work. He'll have to run a dvd player to the screen, an aftermarket DVD HU.

I think I will use my iPod for video for now....then look into a DVD player...I have some more tricks up my sleeve for that

Thanks for the complements guys, here is some more pron:

Weekend update!

Here are some more sexy pics....and then the new roadblocks ahead:

yes, paint still needs to be done, that will be the last thing before it goes in. And the Climate Control does 100% work, WOOT! Also I think I have figured out the security wire on the OEM HU....looks like it is another ground.

Here are the new roadblocks.

* The climate control buttons do not light up...probably because that 'illumination' comes off of the OEM HU harness....easy fix
* The ribbon cable off of the screen to the circuit board behind it is too short....need to start looking at digikey...
* There is a wicked gap between the top of the screen and the center vents....I will have top brainstorm to figure out how to get rid of it. Basically that comes from the OEM HU being beveled, and the screen being flat...I'm open to suggestions.

Enjoy the pron!

you can always buy a small peice of plastic and mold it ontop of your screen to level out with the center peice. It'll look more...uhm futuristic? which should be a good feature for the interior of a car.
