Question 12V plug in shift-light?

Ok, so I bought one of these
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SHIFT...spagenameZWDVW

Now I'm wondering if I should have gone to bed instead of being on ebay.

What do you guys/gals think?

I really do want a shift-light (I'm auto, yes I know). I bought this because I don't want the huge tach by my A-pillar (that's a tad over the top even for my tastes).

why the hell, you should read mikey's post about clutches on a AT as well.

I think the funniest thing is that this is in the performance section.

Why do you need either a huge tach or a shift light?

If a person enjoys performance driving as do I, a shift light could keep me from bumping the rev limiter (slow et) or shifting too early (slow et) or having to take my eyes off the road a..er... I mean track, while driving my car on the edge (safety). You can see the shift light flash using peripheral vision without diverting your eyes.
$25.00 is the lowest price I have seen for a shift light BTW.
However, that being said, I have a MT, not an Auto, but wtf???

I'm well aware of the purpose of a shift light on an MT, my confusion is due to his being an AT. Unless he's trying to perfect the D4-D5 shift.

So what if he's auto, he can still shift the auto manually and this would allow him to shift at a certain preset time. Is a shift light my style? No, but everyone's got their own thing and if it's his style then so be it.

Thank you Accordian.
I got the light because I do shift my auto about 50% of the time.
It's no DSG or SMG, but I can stay in certain gears longer and engine brake.
I read the instruction book (opps, mean manual) and it said I can shift my auto; so guess what, I'm shifting it.
Now since I'm going out of the realm of normal shifting in an auto, I better have something to help keep me in check; that's this little light doober.
To be honest, I don't get close to redline very much; so this is more of a safety thing, and not a crutch that is going to cause me to go nuts.

Plus, at the end of the day, it's another light. I like lights

Update:

So I pluged this thing into my DD, and it's a pretty cool gizmo.
The thing that surprised me however, is that it doesn't connect to the car's tach or anything sensor'ish at all, but instead plugs into the cigerette lighter. So all the info from the car is coming by means of that 12V plug. At first I thought this thing might be using vibration as its clue to light, but no, I shaked the thing and nothing happened. So I guess it uses Volts or Amps as its que.
You set it up by reving to the point where you want the light to shine, and as you keep it at that RPM you adjust this knob until the light shines, then leave it in that position.

Since it's so damn plug-and-play, I'll try it on my AV6; however, I still kinda want a real shift light. Yet I don't know how to hook one up, but it dosen't seem that hard (three wires right?).

Good to hear it works. I would suggest getting a brand name one for your AV6. Most likely it'll come with detailed instructions on how to hard wire it. Probably shouldn't be too difficult.

check ebay for a fake clutch pedal to compliment the shift light too =P

if you arent really using the shift light it'll probably just annoy you overtime and you'll end up getting rid of it

Here is a better photo

But really, I don't think this shift-light thing is all that goofy for an Auto
Might be a tad unnecessary, but I still find it helpful. The car comes with a tach does it not?

What was made for the B16A should stay with the B16A.

Again, I don't know why you guys are bashing him. It's one thing to give an opinion and another to make fun of him. I just did a quick check on some of your cars, and let me just say about 90% of you have some sort of mod that has absolutely no performance value what-so-ever, so it's only function is for style, which is fine, but don't think your sh*t don't stink because I can smell it from here.

Red painted brake calipers, carbon fiber interior trim pieces, carbon fiber pedals, JDM stickers, a carbon fiber hood on a 15-second car, manual shift boots on an automatic, etc etc etc.

You know who you are, no need to point fingers. Shame on you for being hypocrites.

in this case it's not so much a question of performance value, all of the things you listed are show/visual mods anyway and aren't really related to performance. this is more of a case where an item is used out of context in an unecessary way (manual transmission - oriented part used in an automatic transmission car). I think it would be a cool a fun mod to do but again, seems like something that over time would just get annoying since you wouldn't really be shifting the gears.. so the light would be flashing at you yet you wouldn't be doing anything to react to the light.

on the other hand.. since you probably wouldn't be close to redlining the rpms very often unless you are racing, it might be fine since it wouldnt flash very often.

I'm glad to see you got my back on this one Accordian, but don't worry, I'm not getting burned up on this one. Why? Because I'm not trying to claim something that my car is not.
Now if I got some monster tach, a fake clutch pedal, and put the 6-speed shift knob in my car, then I would feel bad when somebody laughed.

Some things to think about:
1.) The light will help if you shift the auto manually.
2.) Pretty sure those fancy manumatic/DSG cars have a shift-light
somewhere, maybe in the cluster.
3.) Nicepeta has a gear-selected display in his ride which probably has a
shift light function, and he has the same
tranny I do. His paddle (and floor) shifter just makes what I'm
doing easier.
4.) If the flashing of the shift light gets bothersome, I just cover it
with the little cap it comes with.

I think I might get a GlowShift for my AV6
