Turbo charging the 7th gen......

Well it is time once again to kick off this project, as many know last time there was a boost controller failure and a tuner that was not paying attention that cause a cato engine failure, this time will be very different. The original turbo kit is being scrapped and is being rebuilt from the ground up. The engine this time will be "built for boost" with custom Darton Sleeves, closed decking the block, custom forged pistons and rods, all parts will be rated for up to 40PSI, heads are getting a stainless valve train, TL-S cams and extream porting on both the intake and exhaust side. The mark is set at 500WHP (15ish PSI), more than that and major suspension changes will have to be made in order to keep the FWD car stright on the street, not saying that may not be in the future. Parts are on order to remake the exhaust and as soon as they come in this week I will start posting pics of the fab. In the mean time I will be fabbing a custom stand for both a engine and trans to help in the fab process and in the future will act as a engine testing and development stand.

More to come.......

i think the j35turbo sticky thread from last year should be replaced with this progress thread... since more of the fabrication will be documented (turbo kit was already assembled last year)

You and me booth, I have been itching to get back to this, there was alot of crap in the old kit that I wanted to get rid of and build it right, this time I can the only thing coming forward from the old kit is the GT35R turbo, the BOV, and waste gate are being scrapped and replaced with quality parts that I am still in the process of selecting. Seeing the car hit 500+WHP at 28.4PSI at 4000ish RPM last year was quite interesting.

good luck Paul.
we've been using alot of synapse bov in our projects. they make great bovs, except for the delicate mounting hardware that needs some TLC. if you're interested in looking at their product, their website is www.synapseengineering.com.

Yeah, not liking the single tiny set screw, if I go with them I would have to add at least two more to feel comfortable.

Well another nice thing that should come out of this is a test stand that I can build and run J engines on, I plan to add a hydraulic brake to provide loading to the engine so it can be initaly run-in before going into a car. This will also allow me to easily swap around different parts and get a good idea of thier effects on the engines as well as play with different tunings.

we do exactly the same, have had a few fall off under boost so we always do the extra mounting.. they're a great BOV though.

Might have to look to using one then.

Yes, but some azz put washers in it to raise the spring tension rather than getting the right spring, this caused the piston to cock in the cylinder and eventualy bind up, so a new one will be used.

A total custom builtd for high boost, should be in the 3.8-4.0L range when done, I will be waiting to hear from the machne shop as to how large a cylinder bore can I go with while maintaining the integrity of the sleeves to hold at least 40PSI. Inital testing of the turbo setup @8-10psi will be done on a stock 3.0L so if something goes wrong I am not blowing a $8K engine.

Bye, bye tranny. Our autos do not do so well with high TQ, you might get lucky like Peter, but you are really tempting fate.

All depends on the bore, the stroke will be 96MM using the forged 3.7L MDX crank, the question is how large of a bore can I go, 91MM = 3.8L, 93MM = 4.0L.
