the muffler usually is louder/quieter when it warms up. theres no break-in period for a muffler...at least none that i know of????

well techincally there is a break in period... especially depening on what kind of muffler you have... its usually a couple hundred miles after u install it, but if its getting louder, i would check on that because the noise dampening material can be deteriating on the inside

carbon build up affects the noise of the exhaust if its brand new, but not that much. That might be what you are referring to. I know when my buddy had cherry bombs put on his 81 camaro (glass packed) they had a little sheet of paper with them that said as the glass gets blown out some the sound will change.

My borla was installed new and I haven't noticed any change in noise yet.

New mufflers have packing in them. When they burn off they get loud. My Tanabe's are pretty loud now compared to when I first got em.
