Oil Catch Can - DIY

Ahh screw it, here it is. It is simple but everyone starts somewhere so if you have questions on a catch can, this is now the thread.

1.) Get a catch can. Bought mine of Ebay and chose this one cuz it opens up


2.) Baffling to catch oil. There are catch cans that have them. If you dont want to do this work, buy the ones that have it.


3.) Tubing


4.) Drill Tubing


5.) Insert tubing


6.) Baffling over Tubing


7.) I zip tied my baffling


8.) Put it back together



9.) Locate a mounting point and mount. I dont have pictures but you can see where I put mine. Front head there is a bracket attaching it to the head with one bolt. Pulled the mount, drilled one of the holes larger on the bracket (I had multiple hole cuz I love to break clips and zip tie things, lol), being my bolt was larger then the bracket hole. If you get a smaller bolt and nut then no drilling is required. Attached the can to the bracket and bolted the bracket back onto the head. I used 8' of vacuum tubing for my routing in front of the radiator to the lines. Don't not use the supplied hose, they smell like someone poured gas all over them and will not support vacuum pressure. I will also be adding an inline fuel filter to the return hose just in case the scrubing pads decide to go to $hit on me, dont want anything sucking into the engine (thanks Quick)


10.) Have someone else install it. Its never to early to start, lol. May be her car one day.

Crap man, if I had an inline filter would probably just use that AS the catch can. Then again my engine doesn't spit much. Good guide, still gotta know where to get that clean blacked out(and serviceable) catch cans.

I noticed some have the air filter on the top of them. What would be the purpose of that?

^ Air Filter on what, catch can ? Baffling is to catch the oil deposits. I didn't realize this can is empty when you get it, so I added the baffling

They have a breather on them. Like the one here.

^ Not sure why a breather is necessary. They are vacuum line so I would think you wouldn't want that. I know with FI engine sometime in boost it will pressurize the canister to the boost PSI, I guess that would be to release pressure ?? IDK

Ive been thinking of doing this too. Just because my engine I have noticed a lot of blow by. I was asking a lot of sellers about these on ebay and most you cannot open and most do not have anything in them. If that is the case is the baffling really necessary? Just wondering.

^ Yes, the oil needs something to catch onto. You can just stuff some of the scrub pads into the canister, but I took it a step extra, which isnt necessary.

Personally, I would have pulled out the hose fittings and drain plug then used Permatex Thread sealant with PTFE on the threads.

Also, when you pulled the top off I would have used Permatex Ultra Grey rigid silicone gasket maker to seal it up.



I didn't use the hoses inside my catch cans like yous, I just used 3 of the pot scrubbers...I think your way may work a lil better by directing all the oil vapors into the baffling. But it is my understanding the oil vapors are heavier than air molecules and will fall down into the baffling.


Keep an eye on that set up for any leaks down the road.

^ I already collapsed the plastic fuel filter, seems to be okay though. I may end buying a metal one but I really wanted to be able to see into it for any crap.

I can also hear slight leaking, I'm going to take your advice and thread seal the whole thing.

I suggest buying a harder plastic inline filter, it has braces on the walls. The other one was thin walled plastic that you could press with your fingers. The new one seems to be perfect.

If you still think you got a slight leak check around the site glass fittings. That's where mine is leaking on both. Just gonna back them out and plug them when I have time.

Those pipes that run from the valve covers to the intake and manifold are for excess pressure to escape the covers. There's a lot of oil being spun around in there and some of it goes through the pipes and into the intake. This causes dirty engines, worse hp because oil is going into the combustion chamber, smelly exhaust. The catch can catches it.

Oh cool. I oughta do this considering that when I took off my IM to replace two of my rocker arms (I decided to foolishly break) that it was fairly dirty. Thanks for the enlightenment, oraclem19!!

Yup. Head to autozone or oreilly's and get some fuel filters, make sure they match the piping size on each valve cover, and wire it up. Running some seafoam or just water through the vacuum port just being the throttle body should loosen up some of that dirt. Not a whole ton of it, but a decent enough amount.

Else, take it off again and use a good 1-2 cans of carb cleaner on the intake manifold and/or throttle body and/or runners to get some restored airflow.

I wouldn't call it an issue but its a cheap way to clean up your intake air a little bit.

Now if you were boosted, then yes, I'd say its an issue. Like any boosted honda.

What does everyone do with the back valve cover hose?

I need to do something with mine...

I upgraded the manifold and I have no connection

for it on the new manifold.

The rear valve cover hose should run back to the intake, if I'm not mistaken. I didn't do a catch can on the rear head because most blow by is on the front (technically called rear ).

Yeah as accord325 said, the rear bank's breather runs up to the intake piping. Are you referring to the brake booster line?

uh oh....

any pics for me to reference?

right now I have only the brake booster line hooked into manifold.


Do I need to buy a VAC Hose TEE and let the rear valve cover use vacuum from the same port on the manifold that the brake booster is hooked into?

I don't have any pics that show anything more than just the port on the side of the rear bank which I'm sure you know where it is.

Its been a really long time but I'm pretty sure the factory hose ran to the factory intake piping and most aftermarket intakes (my V2 and my buddies K&N both did, as well as Paul's setups) have a port on them to plug it in. Did you make a custom intake or something? I don't understand how you lost your original vacuum set up.

As for Ting off the brakebooster port, I would think that it is an option but I'm not sure if it would give as much vacuum as the port on the intake, especially since its feeding two loads now from the same port.

this answers everything.
I used a new intake which has no hole.
I will have to find the right size silicone adapters and get my SRI from Paul back on there with my new manifold and TB.
