Engine in rough shape

I. About to look at a 04 6-6 coupe. It was female driven last with 130k, hasn't really been driven for a year +. There was a PS hose replaced, the ac doesn't work, and CEL. The engine idles rough, doesn't overheat, and I'm gonna go back to the car this afternoon to pull codes.

For the right price I would consider buying the car and doing an engine swap to skip all the engine problems, but it would be nice to fix the underlying issues, or atleast patch them to get me by for a month or two. My questions are...

What engines would work as direct swaps? I would love to go bigger. I read up on debate btw the MDX and odyssey j35a8s I believe, but I wasn't able to conclude which would definitely work with little to no modification.

What would be absolute red flags that would tell me to not even consider fixing of patching the current engine?

The "J35" thread (search "J35") has listed exactly what motor will fit. J35a5-6 will work but are more expensive and harder to find, J32a3 is a good choice being cheaper and easier to find, then a straight J30a4-5 is cheapest and easiest to find.

Nice, I've been researching ever since I joined the forum. I was actually gonna shoot your pm but I don't have enough posts. I found outt a good bit of info in regards to the j35 swap, and just figuring out what to do about tranny options as well. What setup did you end up going with?

It's in my thread. I ended up going with a J32 with 34k (or 37k) miles on the engine. Couldnt pass it up for $400. You can see in my thread how clean the damn thing was I would have liked to have gone with a J35 but spraying 150shot onto the 93mm Rods had me slightly iffy. I'm sure it could handle it, but I feel safer running that much spray on 86mm rods and reving it out.

Misfires on every cylinder, and a random misfire are the codes I pulled. Only other obvious signs from the engine were the rough idle, floating metal looking flakes in the coolant, and black smoke out of the exhaust when you hit the gas.
