cut out

Ive been thinking of a cutout for a few days now and actually just have it in cart.. Question for the folks with cutouts. Where did you place it. Ive seen folks say in place of the 3rd muffler but IMO thats pretty much the same a a catback (which i have). Any dyno graphs.. I guess i like numbers

I will post a picture of my most recent dyno graph (my engine seems to be getting tired) comparing my full bolt on car with stock exhaust and the 3" cutout. Back to back pulls. Just shows how much you really need intake AND exhaust mods to open up the car. My torque is off because of the Final Drive.

Woah woah woah. Is that real? I don't have a catback yet mainly because I like the peace and quite stock gives for DD purposes. But that gain is incredible.

Where did you install it? I'd assume right off the jpipe is best.

Holy **** my mind is blown.

Of course it's real lol. Miller didn't even get out of the car between the dyno runs. It's installed directly to the end of my collector, so it's essentially an open DP setup. When the cutout is closed it's extremely quiet, but with it open the sound emanating from under the car is unbelievable lol.

Couple things to keep in mind, though:

1) I have FULL Bolt ons. 4" CAI/3.7 IM & TB/Ported runners/PCDs/Jpipe - so someone with less mods will NOT see these gains. The whole reason for these gains are the fact that I had so much air being sucked in and essentially, pushed out, up until being choked by the stock catback. Remember, my collector is 3" so the air was coming from 3" only to be shoved into a 1 7/8" stock exhaust pipe.

2) I have the 03-05 catback. Apparently it's a bit smaller in pipe diameter than the 06-07. I bought a 2" flex pipe for it and it was TOO LARGE, so I'm assuming the piping is 1 7/8".

I had gone to the track with my stock exhaust and trapped a best of 102.78 IIRC. These were in mediocre conditions. I then went in much better conditions *also a different track* and went 107.5 with the cutout installed. The cutout alone didn't give me 5mph at the track necessarily, but I would say 3mph for sure. So IMO, it's a no brainer to get a cutout if you want the stealth of a stock exhaust with the option of freeing up that power at the push of a button. I have a DMH cutout and so far, it's been working flawlessly, even through the harsh winter we've had this year in NY.

Thanks for that post Sonnick. I have the same mods so maybe I'll see similar gains. Only difference is I have the 2.5" version of the rv6 j pipe.

I'd much rather have the power on demand than loud all the time. Are you tuned for open or closed cutout? How different is the afr open vs. Closed?

And I thought I was done with HP mods for a while...

Anytime, man. Unfortunately, the AFR wasn't captured on these runs. Had I known this prior to me going, I probably never would've went.

I am E-tuned by Dom for open cutout. I don't know the AFR difference between open and closed, but I am going to do some datalogs to find out. My max timing on this map is 32 degrees, which I think is a bit high and caused me to knock in my 5th gear pull according to a later datalog. I've been doing 3rd gear pulls for tuning on the street, and the 5th gear load is much higher than 3rd, hence why I wasn't seeing any knock in 3rd.

However, I made 264whp on my 5th gear pull earlier in the powerband than my peak in 4th gear (by about 300RPM or so), so I'm assuming I would've made a few more had there not been any knock. Perhaps 268? I am going to try to get the graph, but I believe their email is down. I also made 227wtq on that graph compared to the '200' on this one, ha, due to the FD change.

Yea it's tough to tune on the street when you are doing 3rd gear pulls, since tuning is usually done in 4th. He could only tune as well as the datalogs I gave him, and he did a great job.

I have a 3" cutout. Nothing is better to be loud when you WOT and silent when you are cruising around.

Just be sure to tune for cutout...I lost power with mine no doubt, ironically up top not down low. But then again im running a map for different engine & clutch slips between shifts (which is playing a factor as well)

If you already have an exhaust, a cutout most likely isn't going to do much. A 3" may make more power over the 2.5", but otherwise it may not be worth it for you, Grand. At least until you get a 3" Jpipe.

Any recommendations for brands or models? Prices don't seem prohibitive...I'd like something that will last forever. If I can wire it up to fit next to my sunroof and traction control that would be tits.

That's exactly where mine is. Jiga and I went with DMH. I have nothing but positive things to say. It has had no hiccups, even through the winter we had here in NY. It's $199 shipped and includes everything you need.

And as seen above, the gains (with my mods) over the stock exhaust were insane.

Where do you guys have the cut out ? After the JPipe ? Or somewhere further on the exhaust system ?

Found a shop nearby that will install it pretty cheap.

I'm confused about what size to get though. My j-pipe collector is the standard 2.5". But the catback piping is 1 7/8" according to Sonnick above.

If I get the 2.5 size, how are they going to easily weld it to the 1 7/8" stock tubing for the catback? If I get the 2" size the same problem exists but I feel like I'll be missing out on gains.
