Short Shifters: Why Adapters?

Why are there short shifter adapters instead of a whole shifter replacement? Is there an advantage over the replacement other than simplicity and cost? I searched threads and people talk about it allowing a bit of freeplay when in gear. What causes this? I'd feel a little safer if things were one piece, rather than a little adapter in there.

Can anyone shed some light as to why they are only developing adapters?

I have a Neuspeed in my GEN7. The adapter changes the geometry of the throw. It is a precision machined adapter that gets secured solidly over the OEM piece with a setscrew. After 20k miles of fast, firm powershifts everything is okay. The play you feel is in the cables and shifter base. If one were to redo the whole thing (shifter, base , and cables) it would feel better. Too bad it would probably sell for $500 or more.
