How-To: Install 7G ('03-07) OEM Navigation

I wrote this at a user's request, and although I saw a sticky referring to a Navi install, it appeared to have no pictures or detailed/helpful information for pages so I figured I'd post a copy here as well since I just installed mine 2 days ago

The Setup:
OEM Navigation Unit (mine's out of a 2006 EX-L V6 Sedan)
Upper-dash Info Display Center
Upper-dash to Navi unit harness
Custom wiring harness (contact Martin aka acurahondaexpert on eBay)
DVD-ROM w/ Mount
Navigation Disc
GPS Antenna
Navigation Owner's Manual w/ Navi code & Radio code

1) Remove stock radio (there are many videos on YouTube to show you how to do this properly)

2) Mount the Navi DVD-ROM in the trunk using the OEM mount (located on the driver side just to the right (if looking from outside the car) of the driver-rear speaker)
3) Connect the custom harness to the DVD-ROM
4) Plug in the GPS antenna into the upper-left corner and mount onto the underside of the trunk lid (it is magnetic and I've had no issues losing/getting signal)

4) Run/tuck the harness down the driver side up to the front, up and over the driver foot-well above the cowl and into the radio area (that is now completely open from removing the stock radio)

5) Connect the three PCM wires on the custom harness to the VSSOUT, CAN H and CAN L pins on the PCM Harness (this differs between V6 & i4) - this is what feeds the Navi all of the Trip Computer information (Range, Avg MPG, etc.)
*** These instructions are V6 ONLY!! ** - The i4's PCM is located in the same area, only it is Harness F (I believe) located all the way to the right and may be different pin numbers.

6) Connect the custom harness and the remaining connectors from your OEM harness into the back of the Navi
7) Connect the Hazard Light harness to the Hazard switch and the Upper-Info Center harness into the Upper info display computer and then into the back of the Navi unit

8) Start-up the car and enter in the Navi code, then Radio code (two separate codes) and allow the car to idle for <= 10 minutes until the GPS updates its signal and finds your location. Make sure to park away from buildings, trees, etc. The Navi will tell you what to do.

9) Test everything and make sure it works! All of the radio functions, dual climate, defrosters, manual A/C with each mode (floor, head, combined, etc.)
NOTE: If you own a coupe and buy a sedan Navi, or vice versa, there is a resistor that must be moved in order for your different climate zones (floor, head, etc) to work/function properly! W/o doing this, you will only be able to have the air blowing out the defrost/front windshield vent, as well as, the two side vents.
10) When absolutely happy with everything, and here comes the fun part start finding a way to tuck/run/hide all of those wires/harnesses behind the Navi unit in order to have it sit flush with the dash.

-- I was so tired from working all day on this project (but remember, mine included disassembling and reassembling both units in order to swap the bulb caps; plus there were a few damaged areas on the harness that needed fixed/re-wired as mine is now the 4th car this Navi has been installed in - so mine entailed a lot more work/time at my own choice) that the two bottom edges of the Navi unit was sticking out and not flush with the dash. It drove me crazy but today I tore it all back apart and fixed it until it was perfect When I go to sell the car (if I don't choose to sell the Navi by itself, that is) there is NO way the next owner will ever even question if the car came without Navi! It is a very professional looking job well done!

11) Once everything is sitting flushed, working properly, etc. and you are happy with the end results, go ahead and mount the radio back down with the three screws on top, and two on the bottom.
12) Continue reassembling your lower dash back together (cubby compartment, coin tray, and gearstick surround bezel)
13) Sit back and start playing with your new, awesome toy!

I converted the whitish-green illumination of the Sedan into the orange illumination of my Coupe
Before (stock Sedan Navi, stock Coupe 6-Disc) - Ha, don't mind the 3 Climate Control bulbs that I already started swapping before remembering to take a pic

After (Coupe Navi, Sedan 6-Disc)

Close-up of halogen bulb w/ blue cap (Sedan)

Best MPG this thing will ever read! It was right after I hooked it up to the PCM haha
invsblduck and meguitarist like this.

Another awesome write-up Ben.

When I joined this forum I just needed info on a slight drop.

Couple years later, I've dropped it, custom spoiler, intake, exhaust, rear sway bar, led bulbs everywhere, front strut bar, different rims, mp3/ ipod adapter. lol

Cool people like you tempt us into doing more mods. lol AWESOME.

haha thanks y'all! I'm a big believer in giving back b/c there are so many people over the years on car forums that I couldn't thank enough for saving me thousands (literally) due to their awesome DIY How-To's and pictures. So anytime I do something to my car (which I'm sure y'all can tell by now that I can't, nor ever will, leave a car bone stock!) to take a lot of quality pics and write a very descriptive how-to

I appreciate all the compliments and I am absolutely loving the Navi!! Just seeing this, today, put a huge grin on my face
(Sorry for the blurriness but I was heading to a stop sign & quickly trying to capture it before the instant fuel dropped to zero since it does that when you're not moving)

EDIT to OP: I added a few more pics - the V6 PCM instructions, as well as, pics of the disassembled radio/navi for curious minds. You will notice in my nighttime photo that I chose to customize the lighting underneath the volume/power and tune knobs (they are a much brighter, lighter orange - very closely matches my cluster's needles!). I purposely did this - as it is now 100% unique and my own and will allow anyone in the future who may become owners of it to indeed know that this was my custom project and the Navi was in fact out of a Sedan and converted into a Coupe. No one else will have one w/ that feature. (Well, unless one of y'all copy me!! haha j/k)

I agree with you, Frank - even though many others would shake their heads at us and think otherwise

Looks great! I just took mine out to install a bluetooth/usb adapter and cannot for the life of me get it to go back in correctly. Any tricks you can share that you learned when you took it apart the second time to make it fit flush? I've tried tucking the harnesses everywhere and still can't get it.

THANKS!

I just installed the BT-35 also, run the unit down by the PCM so you're not taking up a lot of room in the navi section. Run your harnesses down the left (driver) side of the navi and tuck all of the connectors under the little metal bar in the back you'll love the BT tho! I do

Thanks! I finally got it all in late last night. I am using a Mediabridge so also ran the usb cord to the glovebox in case I need it. But yes, the BT is great. Thanks!

Great write up. How long did it take you? I did one for a friend on his 04 TL, 10 HOURS! I rather the stock navi than aftermarket.

Took me about 6 hours total but that included coffee breaks, disassembling & reassembling both the navi & 6-disc radios, etc

The cost I was quoted is about 1200 without install cost. The ebay seller name is acurahondaexpert.

That's around what you'll pay for an OEM Navi Martin is a very good guy (acurahondaexpert) and can also supply you with the custom harness that you'll need to do the install correctly

Great write up bro,

Wish me luck I'm doing this same install over the weekend in my 06 Ex-L V6 sedan. Also adding pioneer sub, amp, back up cam and transferring grom audio BT/usb/3.5mm cable from non navi unit.

Newbie to forum so can't post pics yet lol.

Did it and so loving it. Had a few minor issues but Martin resolved them in literally 10 seconds. Still can't post pics but it looks awesome! Only grip and this is minor I have to wait about 3-5 seconds for system to start before back up cam kicks in.

Thanks Ben for this great write up!

I know this post is old... I am trying to find out more information about the specifics of changing a "Sedan" Navigation unit to a "coupe" I saw that there is a resistor I need to change, but Im not sure what resistor, or what needs to be done to it. Please help!!

Sorry Jd, I just saw this but I'm glad you found the other posts on here regarding swapping the resistor! It is extremely tiny and can be hard to see while you're soldering so be careful and take your time.
