How-To: Prevent Hyper-Flash for LED Turn Signals

After installing my TSX LED side mirrors, I had noticed that the LEDs were blinking inconsistently (faster) than my incandescent turn signal bulbs. This was driving me nuts!

So, I had recently ordered LED turn signals (front & rear) from V-LEDs and noticed after putting in the rear, that the hazards flashed at a normal speed (60-120x/minute is considered a "normal flash setting") but while using either turn signal, they'd hyper-flash.

A lot of companies like SuperBrightLEDs and V-LEDs sale, what they call, "Flashers" - basically, flasher relays that have been modified to recognize the lower resistance/power consumption of LEDs. These "Flashers" that you can buy are simple PnP applications to replace your OEM Turn Signal / Hazard relay located in your driver-side footwell fuse panel. However, these are only for your common 3-pin and 4-pin relays. Unfortunately for us (7G Accord owners), we have a 6-pin relay in which I have not come across one company that manufactures/sells a "fix" to our hyper-flash problem.

So, with that being said, I set out and did a lot of research and want to thank Roger (from AcuraZine) and Tom (from RidgelineOwnersClub) for their wonderful write-ups on how they accomplished this mod on their cars (Tom's RL and Roger's TL) and to actually FIX the problem at the root, as opposed to just placing a band-aid over it (i.e. load resistors that need to be properly soldered at each and every location a LED is being used)

DISCLAIMER: I am NOT responsible for any damage that may occur or any mistakes that you make. This How-To tutorial is being written based solely as a demonstration document. Proceed at your own risk.

In the end, the Flasher Relay should continue to function properly with any of the following three setups (per side):
(2) Two incandescent bulbs
(1) One incandescent bulb / (1) one LED
(2) Two LED bulbs

Let's begin by gathering the equipment/tools you will need:

Next, you want to open up the relay to expose the motherboard:

(Note: Remember to cut off the excess wire)

Lastly, swap the stock Flasher Relay with your new modified one and enjoy your now normal blinking LED turn signals

Relay location:

After installing, it worked like a charm! I tested it with two incandescent bulbs; 1 incandescent and 1 LED (rear); and 2 LEDs (front & rear). I no longer have hyper-flash and ALL of the turn signals (front, rear, and mirrors) all blink in sync

Sure thing, Matt! Anyone interested in me making them one, send me $40 (the only company I saw that makes one sells it for $80! ) to cover parts, shipping and a little extra for my time and I'll gladly make you one I've already sold 2 resistors and used 1 myself, so I can make up to 7 left. First come, first serve. Matt, of course, is first.

LMK in PM. Thanks

not everyone can solder bro. Even if they can, some people aren't into DIY and would rather just pay someone. They know my price - if they don't like it, they can DIY or go elsewhere. I don't mind either way.

But anyways, BOT:

Ike & Matt, y'all have PMs. 6 remaining.

Don't get me wrong bro. It was not directed at your price. Fair price for the time and effort you're going to put into it.

Soldering is really great skill to have. Since I learned the basics it has saved me some money on repairs.

I really wish more people would take the time to learn how to properly solder. I first learned in H.S. many many years ago in shop class

But nowadays, it's so easy for people to "wire tap" that they don't care to learn the skill. It truly is a shame, as taps are not reliable at all and 3/4 of the time don't even work. With a good solder joint, you KNOW it's gonna last

Jason:

Yours is done, my friend Money hasn't even transferred into my bank account yet from PayPal...how was that for speed in getting it done, Sir? Now, I can either ship it out tomorrow and have it to you by Saturday, or wait until Apr 8th to ship it out, as you requested. However, I will be shipping it in an envelope, as I believe it's small enough and the mailman will take it. So even if you're not home, it'll just look like a normal letter. LMK - thanks bud!

Matt: The price has raised up to $40, as the cost of the Duralast switches have raised by $5 + tax. I was shocked. I can start yours whenever you wish so just keep me updated bud.

To anyone else interested, I have 6 resistors left. Thanks!

I just placed an order of 4 new switches, one is already paid for by another customer, so I will have 3 left. If another 2 orders are desired, for the remaining resistors, I will place another order. They will be produced the day I receive the switches (they are being shipped 3-5 Day Ground) and will able to ship it out to the customer the very next mailing day

LMK if interested. Thanks!

Feedback: Jason (Ikethegreat) has already received one of my switches

I had a question
Will these resolve:
Hyper-flash when the headlights are off?
But when my headlights are on (the turnsignal on) they don't even blink..

Yes, my switch mod will solve hyper-flash in all of the following with the headlamps ON or OFF:

As per side:
2 incandescent bulbs (stock)
1 incandescent bulb / 1 LED (normal front signal / LED rear or vice versa)
2 LEDs (both front & rear LED turn signals)

I'v got the pre-facelift accord without LEDS, but i'v always thought the LEDs look just as sweet (if not even cooler) as the original 7th gen design.

I want your mirrors DreaminAccord, they're hot

Thanks bud - they're modified OEM Acura TSX mirrors

In this thread, I'm referring to the ability of upgrading your turn signals to LEDs though, not the OEM LED tail lamps

I apologize, I just saw this. PM is always the best way to get a hold of me as it sends me an e-mail notification to my phone. Yes, I am selling the modified switches for $40 + s/h + any/all PayPal fees (that you incur). These switches sell online by only 1 business (that I could find, anyhow) and they go for over $80/each!

Hi can you still use incandescent bulbs with this mod or will I have to put old original relay back?

You said 1 led and 1 original or 2 leds, but there are four turn signals two in front and two in the back. Will this do all four from hyperflashing?

ended up blowing my fuse box due to this mod. luckily it wasnt too hard a fix but since LED's are a lot different, something like:

LED Calculator - Current limiting resistor calculator for LED arrays

can help in selecting the correct Resistor

I'm so sorry to hear that, 2i2! But yes, the brand and quality of the LED bulbs the person chooses is critical as to if the 0.12ohm resistor will be enough. You may need a 0.24 Ohm or even double that depending on the LED bulb. A recent (happy) customer of mine informed me a few weeks back that when he was using the LEDs he purchased off of eBay he was still receiving hyperflash. He upgraded to a much better quality LED and the hyperflash immediately went away / my mod relay worked perfectly. I'm sorry I did not think of this scenario prior but I'm the type of guy who doesn't skimp on quality and believes in "You get what you pay for" so it didn't even cross my mind that people may be using cheap, knock-off LEDs...

I received these today so I have made a new relay using the 0.24ohm 1W 5% tolerance resistor and have taken pics and comparison videos to the 0.12ohm I originally wrote about in this How-to Tutorial.

I obviously had no real noticeable changes between the two, as I didn't have hyper-flash to begin with (with the 0.12ohm).

VLEDs - 21 Bulb 1157 Platinum Amber Turn Signal Bulbs
Extended Description: The 1157 Bulb Family includes replacements for bulb numbers: 1016, 1034, 1157, 1157A, 2057, 2357, 2357A, 2397, 3496, 7528, 1034A, 1034NA, 1035, 1157NA, 198, 198NA, 2057NA, 2357NA, 7528L, 7225, 94, 1076 and 1154.
Part #: 1157_21_A
Series: Platinum
In Package: 2
Operating Voltage (Volts): DC 14.5
Current Draw: 340mA
Output Total Lumens: 170
CANBUS Proof (Y/N): No
Chip Count: 21
Current Control: Driving IC Control
DUAL Polarity (Y/N): No

Some of you may say "50 bucks!?" Well. You get what you pay for. Go ahead and keep buying that eBay garbage...you'll end up spending a lot more on damaged, burnt part replacements than you would've in the first place buying real, good quality bulbs.

PICS:

Digikey.com P/N 0.24ACCT-ND

0.12ohm (LEFT) vs. 0.24ohm (RIGHT)

Soldering job...like a boss.

I thought that I had an extra relay lying around...here it turned out to be my OEM one that I did not want to modify...*shrugs* Oh well. LOL
