3rd gear synchro?

Anyone know how much would it cost to get a 3rd gear synchro done? I've been looking at this car that has a 3rd gear problem. 04 with 87k miles selling for 5000 its a 6-6. Whats better a new tranny or a synchro. I know nothing about synchro problems or any sort of those.

I don't own a 6-6 (unfortunately) but if it were me, for that price, I'd just buy it a new tranny with low mileage. Once you stray away from the original build (the more a tranny is worked on/opened up) the likelihood of more issues occurring increases.

This is not true. Buying a used tranny has far more risk of failure or already bad synchro/gears than doing a rebuild.
A full refresh will cost less than 1200 with the transmission already out of the car.

I stand corrected, OP. My apologies. I've only replaced trannies that were already dead, so listen to nighthawk lol

How bad is the 3rd gear problem? If it's still a minor problem you might be able to cure it by changing the trans fluid to the GM (now AC Delco) synchromesh friction modified fluid. It worked for me and a # of others. I changed over to the fluid 10-2007 and my 3rd gear problem never reoccurred. There should be plenty of threads you can read about it.

I'm one of the 'others' that 'bird influenced................

Spring of 2009, the original Honda fluid was replaced with 2 point something quarts of GMSFM goo..............

65,000 miles later no sign of the dreaded 3rd gear difficult engagement/popout problem. Not one. Perfect.

Back then that marvelous and effectuve stuff was circa $13.00 per quart IIRC........

Seems like a no-brainer to this sailor. Beats the hell out of $1500 large

Again, my sincere thanks to Ypsibird/Aviography

ez sends on this nice morning
