I pull the engine and trans out as assembly (just like Honda does it at the factory). To go out the top with a AT you also need to pull the crank pulley and oil filter foot off the engine and the front motor mount off the subframe, with a MT it is tight and you have to go forward and up to clear the bay and still have to pull the front motor mount off the sub frame. To got out the bottom you have to first support the engine with a special jig from the top, then drop out the subframe.

When I did my clutch job I dropped my subframe and then pulled the transmission from underneath. I used an engine support bar I got from Harbor Freight (search for part #96524, $80) to hold the engine from above. Here are a couple of pictures of how I supported the engine while I removed the transmission. This allowed me to leave virtually all of the wiring connected and untouched while I did the transmission work.

(I don't have enough posts to be able to post pictures yet! But I'm sure you can figure out how to copy and paste. )

I supported one end of the bar on the factory strut tower brace, so I'm not sure if this would be a good option for the I4 crowd or not. You can see the small piece of white high density rubber I used to pad the strut brace, and the supplied bar support on the radiator support structure. This worked great for the week or so that my car was down for this and other associated repair/upgrade work.
