thanks guys! yea i have a few more...gotta go through them and post them. a lot of the pics didn't turn out well because the animals were behind fencing/glass/etc.

does anyone know why flickr desaturates your photos when you upload them? these 3 look totally different on my computer.

updated with more pics

that third picture wasn't so great because i was preparing for a still shot of the closest crane...then all of a sudden the one behind it took off and threw everything outta whack. but i still like it because i got the other crane in mid flight.

SteVTEC -- I was using a 55-200mm VR Nikkor lens. VR is GRRRRREAT! I think my next lens is going to be the Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8...first macro lens with VR =]

Ah, nice! I could tell it WASN'T the 18-200VR. Just wasn't sure if it was a 200 or 300. I have the non-VR version of the 55-200 and it makes great images too, except no VR so it's pretty useless once the light fades. Gonna sell it to help finance a 70-300VR for Christmas maybe.

I wanna get the 18-200...that'll solve my lens switching problem. i like to take outdoor pictures more than anything...and you catch dust so easily when swapping lenses outside.

If you get the 18-200VR, I might be interested in your 55-200

Except that the 18-200 has nowhere near the image quality of the 55-200. You trade off IQ to get a bigger zoom range.

oh man.. you're giving me 2nd thoughts on whether or not i should get the 18-200 vr now.. so do you think the 70-300 vr has about the same image quality to that of the 55-200vr?

That SOB did the same to me! He knows his stuff, so I'm liking the 70-300VR more and more now.

The 70-300VR is probably a little better. As for whether or not to get the 18-200VR, it all depends on your shooting style. The 18-200 is much more suited towards landscape and scenic photography, but it's a horrible portrait lens. I used to be more a landscape/scenic guy, but then I had a baby so now I'm more of a portrait shooter.

Compared to the 18-200VR, the cheapo little 18-55 kit lens for $100 is sharper from 18-55mm, and the cheapo $169 (non-VR) 55-200 is sharper from 55-200mm. But then you have to switch lenses, which is a pain, and you open up the possibility of getting dust on your sensor. The 18-200 is a big compromise as far as image quality goes, but as long as the lens fits your shooting style it's still a great lens. Just not my cup of tea. That and the lens costs pro-level money but doesn't give you nearly pro-level quality.

I told kramer2k that for the current street price of an 18-200VR ($750) he could get a refurb Nikon D50 as a secondary body for $400, buy my 55-200 for $125 shipped and paypaled, and then get a 50mm f/1.8 to play with ($100) to get started in prime lenses, and still come out ahead of the 18-200VR and have a far more flexible kit to boot.
