Mazda6 vs. SVT Cobra: possible?

Me: stock 04 mazda 6s, auto

Him: 98 SVT Cobra, 5-speed manual, v8, 315 hp, 310 torque
his mod: straight pipes with catalyst converter removed

What will it take on my car for me to beat him stoplight to stoplight, and on the highway?

Is it even possible?

I apologize for the noob question, I know close to nothing. A supercharger, maybe? Some "headers"?

Thanks, in advance.

You need to buy a new car! It is gonna take tons of money to get your car up to his level plus you have an auto tranny!

No chance in hell with an automatic 6s.

With a manual 6s (a lot quicker) and forced induction (turbo, supercharger, or nitrous) you *might* have a chance from a roll. But never ever from a stop. RWD will takeoff like mad whereas a FWD will just spin the wheels. But there are no supercharger or turbo kits for the 6s just yet, and you'd need enough nitrous that you'd probably have to upgrade the entire fuel system as well. And say bye-bye to your warranty after doing that also.

If you want a fast 4-door for about the same price as a 6s, get an Altima 3.5SE manual. You're still not going to beat your buddy's Cobra, but now you're at least within firing range. Still not gonna take him from a light either (unless he blows his launch) but from a roll and with bolt-on modifications (intake, pulleys, exhaust, headers, etc) you might be able to "hang with" him (still not beat him) and still maintain factory reliability. You'd still probably need forced induction to beat him even on that car.

Not in this lifetime

Seriously though, what Steve said is right from what I can see. And Steve, he's getting an auto 6s so a M/T Altima would be out of the question .

But don't let this alter your decision on the car you want. Shouldn't worry about beating a friend of yours car with the new one you get. Especially if its a 98 Cobra .

Thanks for the info, fellas.
I have some more pertinent questions:
Why is a manual better than the automatic? I know the automatic has a manual shift option.. Is it because of "gear ratios" or something to that effect? Can I utilize the manual shift option on the automatic to my benefit for this particular matchup?

What is the advantage of a turbocharger over a supercharger, or vice versa? I know they both force induction of air into the engine, and that there is a "turbo lag"; wouldn't this make the supercharger a much better choice every time?

Nitrous to me doesn't seem worth it; it's almost like cheating. I'm sure everyone else doesn't agree, but to me it seems kind of like car steroids.

Oh, and something else I learned: bigger exhausts mean less backpressure, right? So I'm guessing an engine needs a perfect balance of air intake and air outflow. Who knows where to find that perfect balance?

I have done research, but don't understand most of what I read

Can anyone break it down, layman's style, for me?
Or better yet, a manual where I can read up on the basics of cars? I always see terms like headers, gear ratios, pulleys, MAF, ECU, etc. and have little to no knowledge of what they are, but would like a more intimate knowledge.

hey hey hey, the auto tranny in the 6s ain't all that bad. I've beat cars i didn't expect to, like my friend's RSX-S (ACT racing clutch, CAI, performance brake pads). I beat him in manual mode though, and he's a better driver now, so he could take me now, i guess.

PlumAccordCoupe, thanks for the info
I've only read the first article
it's really confusing, with the planety gears and the sun gear, etc.
but I'm getting the gist of it.

I recommend you buy yourself and RX-(7/8), mod the F*** out of it. Then you'll beat your buddy no problem With a 6, no chance, sorry. Just challenge him to an autocross, see who wins then

Challenge him to an autocross?
Lol, like that ever happens
Most races just pop up when you see open stretches of highway

Oh well, I hope some more parts will come out for the 6 and I'll just cross my fingers and hope

I don't think I'll say that... anything is possible if you have money. Say he does, he can swap the auto to manual tranny, add an Injen intake, from the other thread they said the Injen intake add 20hp alone. Do some major head and IM port and polish, bore the TB, add every single bolt on that's available, crazy weight reduce and maybe some F/I... I'm sure it's possible to make a M6 to beat a Cobra. After I saw a madly modded MX-6 ran 7's, that tells me anything is possible if you have the money to support it

BUT why would you wanna race a sport car with a sport seden?! The reason why I ask is because the M6s is not meant go fast
