7th Gen V6 6MT vs. Saturn Ion Redline

This was an interesting encounter as I haven't street raced in well over a year. I was heading to pick up a buddy, and an Ion Redline (stock I believe) was behind me. I got in the right turn lane in a 45mph zone, adn this guy in front on me was going like 30mph. So he finally gets out of the right turn lane, and I gun it in 3rd. I hear the Ion Redline sitting behind me do the same. So I figure there's a good chance if we can line up, I'm going to get a run.

I take a right with the Ion Redline right behind me, and wait in 2nd gear for him to come up next to me and line up. Oops, there he goes going WOT right by me I was like "damn, there goes my chance." But as luck would have it, the light in front of us went red and we both got a chance to line up. There was a little moisture on the ground so when the light went green, we didn't go full out. Neither of us would have had traction. I got up to about 35mph in 2nd gear and he was right at my passenger side mirror. I waited for him to hit it, and he finally did. He went WOT and by the time I went WOT we were dead even.

2nd gear at 35mph is a pretty decent spot for our cars - believe I was sitting at about 3500rpms. As 2nd gear wound out, I put about a car on him, and then through most of third I put another few cars on him. In the end, it was probably about 4 cars total. Nice run, gave each other the thumbs up and went on our way.

Cliffs: '05 Accord Coupe V6 6MT with CAI beats stock (I think) Saturn Ion Redline by about 4 cars.

Exactly. A four banger needs to bring
some serious boost to the table to play
with an AV6 6MT...

How's that for a blanket statement?

Exceptions apply.

Unfortunately, I don't think an Ion Redline needs a lot of work to beat my setup - maybe a smaller pulley and some tuning. But you're right, with the setups we both had, it wasn't much of a contest.

Those redlines can be modded to be pretty quick.......just that no one really does. At least not around this area, they are all stock. I tried to get a blue redline to mess with me last week, but he didnt take the bait. I always wondered how the AV6 would stack up against those redlines...never got a chance to run one when i had my accord. Nice kill.

I'm not knocking Saturn at all. I could care less...I was just happy to find a nice guy that was willing to do a quick run. Never seems to happen around here, ever.

The 2007 Saturn Ion Redline is a pretty quick car according to Car and Driver.

Putting 4 car lengths sounds like the guy didn't know how to drive.

The Ion Redline, IIRC, has 205hp/205torque. Don't know the weight. It's SC'ed...pretty much the same car as the Cobalt SS, but from what I understand the gearing in the Ion Redline is horrible, so the Cobalt SS is slightly faster. IIRC, they run mid 14s at around 95mph or so.

So yea, the 4-bangers are closing in on us very quickly.

I could care less though, I drive an Accord, its not a sports car, it gets me around town with a bit of pep.

Yea, he probably couldn't drive...seeing as how we went from a 35mph punch in 2nd gear. Really hard to slam that gas JFWY. He didn't seem upset, he gave me the thumbs up. Fact is, we trap a few mph higher with just a CAI, so it seems to make sense to me. And let's face it, judging car distances in a race is about impossible. For all I know, he might have shut down when I put a few cars on him through 2nd and part of third, so the outcome might be inflated in that sense. But let's be real - honestly, we started in the same gear, and he got beat. I've never posted a kill story on this board. lol...I guess people always have to be cynical and that's fine. Such is life.

sorry dude ... i didn't mean to sound cynical ... i have the v2 and comptech catback on my 6speed and i know how it feels in 2nd gear at 35mph but i was thinking that the Redline would have decent mid-range power because its s/c'd ... well at least your kill story will give me more confidence if and when i meet up with a redline who wants to play.

so what was your most intense kill story? mine would have to be beating a modded 330i sedan on a local street with a posted speed limit of 40mph during evening rush hour. the only reason why we raced was because we were in front at the stop light with no traffic in front of us for about a 1/4 mile till the next light. we were going at it and his bumper was at my door when we shut it down.

anyway man, good run. post more kill stories or got killed stories. its good reading!

I know what you mean - kill stories always have to be taken with a grain of salt. And yes, they make good mid-range torque. But as I previously said, their gearing is terrible. He might have been in a very weak spot in 2nd gear for all I know...but honestly, I didn't know with a SC that he would have had a weak spot in such low rpms.

But hell, in the end, street racing is far from concrete. In every single instance, you're going to have a better driver in one car. In this case, maybe it was a mix of me being slightly better (though I don't know how since we did a roll race) and my car being slightly faster and him being in the wrong part of his powerband. Unfortunately, I'll never know - unless I run across him again

Edit: PS - a 330i is faster than a Saturn Ion Redline. You would do just fine against the Redline IMO.

And I don't have many intense kill stories, but my favorites are always against my buddy. He has a I/E/chipped E36 M3, 5MT. I would race him all the time in my I/E/Hondata RSX-S...he would beat me everytime by about 2-3 cars, but it was fun because we were even drivers. Plus, you didn't have all that testosterone issues that you normally have in street racing encounters. It was all for the fun of it.

Ion Redlines are nice little cars. I almost got one instead of my accord and I still kick my self every day I didn't.

Not to mention, they can modded a hell of a lot easier. I know a guy who put $600 into his and he got it to 260whp on the dyno I believe.

Super not to mention, they and Colbolt SS are both very underrated. They're like 220whp I think.

But for a 2900lb. car with similar power, I would think it would have been a lot closer to maybe even a loss for the accord.

The re-sale on the Accord will be much better.

Is the Chevy Cobalt and the Saturn Ion the same car?

There are brutally fast modded Cobalt SSs out
there (I've never see one, regardless) because
of factory support. Neons too. Maybe even Focuses
(although I doubt they could really be brutally fast
but stranger things have happened look at the
Neons and Cobalts...)

It all boils down to cubic dollar$.

Come on Duce, no need for that attitude.

Like it was mentioned, that RedLine could be modified relatively cheaply to yield decent gains over factory form. I am going to go out on a limb here and bet that br311 is an above-average driver too. I've read plenty of his posts and he knows his stuff. It could be possible that you can go even further -- and handicap this run as a byproduct -- by assuming the race would have been closer if, in fact, the driver of the RedLine was equally as skilled. Just food for thought...

I do question this new phrase "so its still a Neon" or Its still a saturn, or cobalt, or lancer"....i dont understand the point of that? I think this line is said only when "the srt-4, evo, cobalt ss, redline smoked me"....and so on.......

Yeah there seems to be a bit of a
double standard here. And to think
I assumed the Cobalt was the
same platform as the Cavalier...
Pardon if you have one, but I think
Cavs were better off left in their
native ore state.

It's not exactly a new phrase. And the point is that even though the Accord isn't always faster, it's still a better car then any Neon, Cobalt or Saturn. Build quality, reliability, ride quality, noise, and engine life on the Accord is far and away better then any of those cars you mentioned. That and it looks better. Let's face it, every Saturn car ever introduced, with maybe the exception of the new Sky for some people, has been hideous. I don't understand why I should have to "respect" your ride, if your ride sucks. You drive a Neon...your car sucks...and most Neon drivers know that. If they had more money, they wouldn't drive Neon's.

Pretty harsh words there chappy.

Not that I can drive one, but I actually like the Cobalt SS's. The srt-4's also. I honestly couldn't see myself driving one, but I think they're pretty bad. The red-line though, nah. I just dont think they look good at all.

I for sure 100% agree as in reliability and quality accord beats those mentioned. My point is why is that phrase used, and to show what? I can vouche that SRT4 drivers hate the fact they drive NEONS, and well they are cheap, so the kiddies drive them. As far as the others, cobalt, redline, and etc....those cars are cheap imitations bang for buck, "fun" cars. SRT4 owners are on my top hate lists, then WRX, and riced civics. Sure the SRT4 can outrun my old auto accord, but it cant outrun its "UGLYNESS". And yes, saturn needs to just give up.
