3MZ-FE is loud at idle

I've noticed that the 3MZ-FE in our RX is unusually loud at idle for a V6 engine. It's hard to describe the noise but it's like a really fast ticking sound. Luckily, I can only hear it when I'm standing outside of the car or else it would really get on my nerves.

Is this sound normal for the 3MZ-FE? Thanks in advance for your input

Fuel injectors make a ticking sound that you can hear at idle. So it could be that. Does it get louder/faster when you give it some gas in neutral?

Our 1MZ powered Highlander had some ticking noises at idle. It was actually pretty loud too. No driveability issues, not really noticeable in the cabin, and the car runs fine and gets decent mileage. So I just concluded it was normal and didn't bother with it. I think it sorta went away or got quieter. Haven't listened to it lately or heard any complaints from the better half.

I guess it's normal then, since it runs smoothly and seems to drive just fine. I was just surprised by the noise since my J30A1 is noticeably quieter, if you ignore the humming sound from the intake So the ticking must be a Toyota V6 thing, since your Highlander does it as well

Chris, it's funny you mention the fuel injectors because I just read through the RX330 reviews on Edmunds.com, and someone was complaining about the loud fuel injectors at idle. Interesting I always thought that the injectors were silent and that it was the valves that make all of the noise in an idling engine.

I work at a Lexus dealer and we get a handful of complaints to check it out each day. The best explanation one of our ASMs gave was "Normal condition due to larger engine displacement. Generally, large engines will have more idle volume than lower displacement engines."

Comparison between the owner's RX300 and RX330.

I'm waiting for the RX400H due in a bit =D

Thanks for the explanation xravexboix That makes perfect sense.

Just out of curiousity, are there any common problems with the RX330 that I need to look out for? Thanks.

Okay but my Honda J30A1, Nissan VQ30DE, and Toyota 1MZ-FE are all 3.0L displacement. The VQ is super silent at idle, the J30A1 had very light ticking, and the 1MZ had much louder ticking. They're all 3.0L engines.

I don't see how displacement has much to do with a "tick" noise.

hahahha...My new 2004 Sienna, with the same engine has the loud ticking sound as well.

It's ESPECIALLY apparent when the AC is on. My wife was *****ing about the noise as well and normally she doesn't care! I've taken it to two different toyota dealers and both say its normal. Weird huh? It's quiet inside...just kinda loud when you're standing outside.

Some of the folks at siennaclub.org were complaining about the same thing.

Nice to know that its normal.

I guess it's forgiveable since you can only hear the noise outside of the car, but you just don't expect a $30k-$40k Toyota/Lexus to make such a noise. I mean, I can hear it from across the street for cryin' out loud I wonder what Toyota could do to lessen the noise?

The interior of the RX is so nice that it makes my AV6 feel like a Pinto in comparison

Its strange that this loud noise is normal. Well since you canít hear it on the inside, its only an annoyance to the cars around you .
