Question:

Does Toyota (or Lexus) make anything that could hope to compete with a BMW 540i 6 speed?

Not yet, although, with some tweaking the new Avalon COULD give the 540 a good run for its money. It would need major suspension work and then we'll have to dea w/ the usual fwd quibbles.

Please define compete? Straightaway? Curves? Both?

The new Lexus GS series is probably the closest to competing w/ the 5-series. I don't have the specs on those but if you do some research on the net, you'lll find some prelim specs on the new GS coming out later this year.

If you are looking for top notch reliability, then that's a no brainer. Toyota/Lexus all the way.

lol, the only way the new Avalon would give a 540i a run for its money is on the highway, auto vs auto. 280hp is about equal to 282hp on the 540i. Otherwise the 300+ lb-ft of torque on the 540 (4.4L V8) will slaughter the Avy.

A 540i 6spd properly driven, is a high-13 car. Lexus doesn't have anything that will compete at that level. I think the new Avalon will do a 14.5-14.6 or thereabouts, depending on how well it can launch. The GS400/430's will do low-14's. The 2006 IS350 6spd should be able to do about 14-flat if not sneak into the 13's, but that's a much smaller car.

A higher level GS would do it, if they make one. The 4.7L VVT-i V8 has almost identical specs as the old BMW 4.4L V8. 282hp/325tq. If they put that in a GS with a 6spd auto it would probably perform about on par with a 6spd 540.
