SOLD: Nikon 70-300mm VR lens MINT

Only very lightly used. Great sample sharp all the way out to 300mm. VR system is phenomenal. I can get sharp shots at 300mm at slower than 1/30s and shoot the last fading light of a sunset at only ISO 400!

Will post photos later. Includes everything it originally came with. Box, paperwork, lens pouch, hood, front and rear caps, and I'll even throw in a free protective UV filter.

ASKING $400 including shipping, paypal, and USPS Priority shipping.

Had family over yesterday and today so didn't get time to do a lens photo shoot or even pull the box out but here's an old photo of it on my D40.

Well dammit! I had the lens out taking some photos of it and then later in the day there was a nice sunset that I used it for, and now I don't know if I want to sell it anymore!

Here's some of the sunset shots. I loved the banding effect from the cloud layer. These are straight off of my D40 but with some tweaking they'd really come alive I think.

155mm, f/5.6, 1/40s, iso400

125mm, f/5.6, 1/50s, iso400

And then here's what this thing can really do.

300mm, 1/25s, f/8, iso400 (click for bigger)

aaarrggghhh, to sell or not to sell? Stupid Nikon LLD (Lens Lust Disease)

Jeff,

Believe it or not I actually wanted to pickup some C...C...CANON gear.

I sooooooo want this lens: Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L

The 70-300vr is great except when you're trying to chase kids around in fading light, the f/5.6 aperture slows you down too much and you really need something faster. And while it has "good consumer" build quality, while running around with kids I'm too worried about smacking it into something and wrecking the thing.

The 70-200vr f/2.8 has all the speed I need, except that it's a friggin beast. It's extremely heavy, very long, has a whole lotta weight at the far end, and as a result has a very large moment of inertia which makes it difficult to maneuver quickly and get on target. It feels like trying to use a sniper rifle in a house as opposed to a sawed off shotgun, LOL. For digital I almost never need f/2.8 and can get by with f/4, although it does come in handy with film.

That's where these lovely Canon f/4 lenses come into play. They give you outstanding optics and a professional build quality with that extra bit of speed you need over an f/5.6 without all the expense and weight of an f/2.8. Nikon makes no constant f/4 medium or telephoto zoom lenses and forces you to choose between too slow f/5.6, or way too friggin big, heavy, and expensive f/2.8 with nothing in between. The Canon 70-200 f/4 non-IS is $599 on rebate right now, and it's no heavier than a 70-300vr.

Except that...

I'm reading about a ton of sample variability in these Canon 70-200's. Ken noted it in his review, and I've seen lots of reports of sample variation going all over the place on other review sites that have looked at these. ARGH!!

Then I've been reading that the ergonomics on the newer Canon bodies have improved a lot also, but that if you just happen to shoot JPEG which I do you probably won't get the best results due to non-defeatable noise reduction acting up even at low ISOs. Well that's a deal-breaker for me, I suppose. There's some other Canon glass I wanted to try out too (85/1.8, 135L), but you can't shoot them without a Canon body also.

So I don't think I want to pickup some Canon gear to supplement the holes that I need filled in the Nikon lineup anymore. I use 300mm infrequently enough that I could just pickup a 300mm f/4.5 manual focus lens for $100, but having 70-300 on one lens is definitely quite handy. I might try the Tokina 50-135mm f/2.8 DX lens. Great build quality, decent optics, fast AF, and not much heavier than the 70-300vr. Hmmmm.....

i need this for football and basketball i sit so high up i need a decent zoom~

would the speed be a problem...? esp football games goes into the night and outdoor there's still light but not like basketball since indoor lighting is sufficient

An f/5.6 isn't gonna cut it for that. 2.8 would be a bare minimum.

$400 is pretty much it. They go for more than that on eBay. $400 was already my "V6P hookup" price.

You have been selling this for ages!! I should have bought this just to see how good the VR is, but with what I do, I don't know if the variable aperture would suit me. Seems better as a telephoto landscape lens, am I right?

If you buy this trevor it will leave you wanting a 70-200... it isnt fast enough in any low light but its amazing outside during the day.

Steve- tried craigslist or Fred Miranda? theres 70-300 VRs listed all the time for about 450... this should sell quick over there.

I've had it up for sale for ages, but haven't been pushing it. If I really wanted it gone I'd have it gone in a week or less.
