The Black Cat has one of the worst lighting in the world. Red's are too strong. The other color lights were either turned too far down into the crowd or too far back. White Balance was a bear and with the super strong Red's, ouch. Very tough venue to shoot. Out of 200 some shots, I got about 20-30 keepers. lousy 10-15% keeper rate...I can do better w/ much better lighting...lol. Other bands have asked management about their lighting, but I guess they don't really care since there isn't that many decent band places in DC. Oh well. At least Olivia liked the first shot which will probably end up on one of their flyers or even their next CD.

Anyone else w/ rock band shooting experience, please comment. Anything else I could have done?

Canon 40D shooting with Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. WB set at Tungsten, ISO 1600-3200. Shutter speeds ranging from 1/30 through 1/60, aperture at 2.8 through 5.6. Most were 2.8 though.

I think it looks fine. What were you trying to achieve? Completely neutral lighting or skin tones or something?

These were the decent ones. I have about 150 other pictures where the Red totally blows out the pictures...lol. I played w/ curves a bit last nite to take out some red and boost green and blue, but it only works if there are any green and blue data left. I'll play a bit some more to see what I can recover.

At least I know i'm not the only one w/ the same problem sat nite. If you goto flickr and do a search for "olivia housemates" you'll find the pics from the other photographers there. Some just converted the pics to black and white, a nice idea, but I think it loses some of the appeal of the photos. But that's just me.

Most clubs don't allow flash photography. The Black Cat also had signs at every doorway stating No Flash Photography in case people forgot.

50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4. Looks like that woulda worked pretty well in most of those photos. Or get the 35mm f/1.4L. f/2.8 is still slow in conditions like those.
