Help with photoshoot!!

OK just got a call from a friend tonight and he said that a local band he knows is wanting a photoshoot...so he showed him my pictures of cars and other stuff and the band said they liked it..so wed night i am meeting the band on campus for a photoshoot...they said they are going to try and come up with some themes and locations..

but does anybody have any pointers on settings and what not??

i have kit lens, 100-300mm, then a 24mm...also have a SB600 speedlight flash...then of course a tripod/monopod...

any pointers would be greatly appreciated...

Lighting is going to be your biggest challenge, especially at night. A tripod lets you pull off long exposures, but doesn't do you any good unless your subjects sit still.

I would get a hold of any additional lighting equipment that you can, and maybe try the slow flash sync mode.

yeah that is what i figured...hopefully wherever the location is i can get enough lighting..i am thinking about going and getting a TTL cord so i can have my SB external..but not sure if it is worth the money...i could probably get more lighting equipment if i had more time..not sure i do though..might go walking around campus tom night to just check out locations..see what i have to work with..i haven't been on campus at night in forever..

i would say go on location with your equipment and play with lighting. Like VTEC-v6! said, lighting is going to be your biggest challenge. Your speedlight probably won't do too much good outdoors at night...but if you can set it up close enough to the subject you should be able to get something going. Having a diffuser might help you. If you don't have one...there are vids all over the internet about how to make your own from stuff around the house.

Maybe grab a piece of white poster board and have someone hold it up so you can bounce the flash off of it? I've done that with some indoor photos and the results are very nice. It gives it a soft, natural light from any direction you want.

So how did this end up? I've been eagerly awaiting your pictures so I could learn something... because there may be a time I may have to take pictures at a nightclub.

haha sorry i haven't had time to edit that many...it turned out pretty good..the lighting ending up being horrible..we went into a lecture room, and the lighting had presets and none of them were set up good for photos...so i had to do lots of adjustments..

The photos of them playing turned out ok, but it was either choose between dark photo clean, or brighter but blurry..HOWEVER they invited 5 girls over and one of the chicks was extremely hot...

be on the lookout for the pictures though..i am on vacation
