11mm to 300mm on a crop body DSLR

11mm (look at the two trees right where the sun is setting)

16mm (different day and composition, sorry)

200mm

300mm

The 11 vs 16/18mm comparison isn't very good, but I figured I'd show it. I'll try to find a different more head to head comparison. For sunset or sunrise type photos, a 300mm lens will definitely get you much closer to where you want to be than a 200mm. Actually I want a 400mm so that I can get right up in the face of something and fill the frame with a dim rising or setting sun, but considering the price of a 400mm zoom (well over $1000) it's cheaper to just get a 10/12MP DSLR body and crop the difference out to 400mm instead so that you still have a nice chunk of file leftover for a good sized print. Hope this helps those fretting on a 200 vs 300mm zoom lens.

The sky in the 16mm photo is amazing...very nice picture. I had considered getting a lens that zooms to 300mm, but I don't do a lot of photography that requires it. I'm saving up for the 70-200mm or the 80-200mm. I'm thinking for the $600 price difference, I'll go with the 80-200mm and not worry about the lack of VR. Hopefully the f/2.8 will eliminate any need for the VR.
