Don't you already have one Chad? No point in getting a new one if you haven't fully tried to utilize your current one.

100-150 will probably only get you an aluminum one. I haven't spent that much time with an aluminum one, but my CF one is very nice and easy to carry (light weight). Manfrotto (Bogen) and Gitzo are great brands, you can't go wrong with those 2. As for specific models, just look for those brands in your price range.

Yea, those companies make quality items so you can't really go wrong. BH Photo has a nice manfrotto system done for roughly $160. It looked pretty nice.

you could also look for a knock-off on ebay. It might be a little heavier but should work fine. I have a manfrotto myself and really like it

I nicer lens won't do any good if the camera isn't held steady.

A tripod is a pretty serious investment that you shouldn't cheap out on. You mentioned having a ballhead joint on your current tripod, does that include the camera mount on it? If so, I'd use that for now and just pick up a good set of legs. Manfrotto/Bogen, Gitzo (like mentioned) and Velbon all make excellent products. They get very expensive, very quickly.

yeah i bought a manfrotto ball head joint with quick release mount on ebay. its bulky though but i like it. now the tripod itself is a 20 dollar tripod. its cheap plastic.

i was browsing through cametacamera and came across this. what do you guys think?
