Even my wife is cracking up about this. She's like, geez that piece of crap actually takes some nice photos! Why can't you find more deals like that?

WIN!

Yup it's a Vivitar 135mm f/2.8 AI

I've seen them branded as other things too like Kalimar and Promaster, so I guess they whored out this design. Body is clean and glass is clean, but the built-in hood won't stay extended. Performance wise it's just plain awful wide-open at f/2.8. Unusable due to excessive haze and CA softening and discoloring everything. But from f/4 to f/8 it's actually pretty decent! It never gets "super duper" sharp and the CA is pretty bad, but it's sharp enough to actually use and the bokeh is nice at f/4 at least! At f/5.6 and smaller the six-bladed diaphragm leaves you with obvious heptagonal blur circles which can get pretty distracting. I think it might also be a little bit slower than rated, but hey for five bucks I ain't complaining!

f/2.8 - yuck!
&mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]">

f/4 - wow nice! decent circular neutral to nice bokeh and sharp, although still some CA
&mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]">

f/5.6 - also sharp, CA mostly gone, but now you start to see the heptagonal blur circles
&mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]">

f/8 - I think it's a little softer, but could have been my focusing
&mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]">

f/11 - softening due to diffraction I think
&mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]">

not bad, huh?

Even my wife got a chuckle out of this one. Told her I was going to the shop for some lens caps and when I told her I got another lens when I came home I got the evil eye. Then I told her it was 5 bucks and she did the head tilt to the side "huh?" thing. Technically I paid 15, but it came with both front and rear caps and at this price point you have to figure those in. I was buying the caps and just got a whole lens for another 5, lol. Even she thought some of the test shots looked pretty nice. I already have the Nikkor 135mm f/2.8 AIS and it doesn't compare (obviously the Nikkor is superior) but this will be a fun little lens to play around with. Might even take it apart one day if I'm bored just to see the innards of these things and how they're built.

I took my daughter out to the park yesterday and just for gags mounted this piece of junk on my D200 to see what it would do. All of these shot at f/4 in "Normal" picture style mode and straight off the camera.

This is by far the most AWFUL lens I now own, and yet it's still capable of making some half decent photos. Makes you realize just how spoiled we are today and how it's so easy to take for granted the optical superiority of even the cheapest kit lenses compared to this. Pixel peeping at 100% it's glaringly apparently that it's still fuzzy even stopped down a bit and that the CA never completely goes away, but for smaller print sizes it'll do just fine I bet. Also I think it might be a good half or maybe even a full stop slower than rated at each aperture setting because my shutter speeds never lined up with what I ought to have been getting. Shooting mid-day "Sunny-16" conditions, that rule of thumb says I ought to have been getting 1/100s shutter speeds at f/16, but I only got 1/50 or 1/60s. Opening up a bit to f/11 I got 1/80s, so it's definitely slow. It's noticeably lighter than my Nikkor 135/2.8 AIS is too, so definitely less glass on the inside.

Anyways, the learning experience and perspective gained from shooting with this nasty lens was well worth the $5 price, so I consider myself a satisfied customer.
