Please help O` Camera Gods.

Ok, so I take alot of pics for my forum posts, but most of them come out looking like cold shyt, blurry or over bright. I only have a little Cannon Powershot 230 or 330, not great , but its what I have, at least it's 5MP.

Now given that I prefer to put my limited money into making my car go fast and don't really want to drop $1K or more for a really good camera, what basic things can I do to try to take better pics given what I have?

Yep, are you sure you are ready for this? Not to many of our friends have put it together yet. Halocoupe, 06nighthawkav6, you and NVA are the only ones that know at this point.

This thread cracks me up for some reason!!!

Back on topic.
Get some tips from someone who is knowledgable with cameras. I have a 2 year old Sony 5 MP (DSC-W1) camera and I used it constantly for the first 3 months or so. Just recently, I lent my friend my camera since his camera gear was stolen from his car (Thieves suck). The pictures he took with my camera were frickin awesome! So I asked him to teach me how to use it properly and its amazing what you can do with a standard digital camera. Just by adjusting/customizing the settings make a big difference. It motivated me to start looking at SLR's now.

this is what i learned about photography. there's aperture (blurness in the background) and shutter (lighting). you have to adjust that. you should also adjust the white balance. if you have those compact camera, don't bother trying take pictures like those professionals. not to hate but those cameras doesn't have the manually focus dial. all you can do with those small compact camera is taking a picture and edit them on photoshop. i have a Fujifilm 4900z (5mp). even though it's only 5mp but the quality is really good. you just need to learn that tripod is your best friend and lighting (shutter, external flash, etc.) will help you a lot. also, lens do a lot of tricks too. but then again, i'm also an amateur that is still learning so don't take my words too seriously.

i have a p&s sony dsc-w80. i think my pics are pretty good for a p&s.. it's also a 7.2 but mp doesn't really matter, only for prints does it matter. some of my older pics i shot with 32mm disposables and i've gotten lots of compliments on them. my old cam was an HP Photosmart with a 5.2 and that cam has no adjustments/etc.. but i still shot decent pics.

things to keep in mind: composition, current lighting conditions, exposure, balance, and the subject. anyone can do macro these days with a digicam, so a way to keep macro interesting is by the composition and lighting.

if your shots are coming out blurry, get a tripod or that gorilla pod for weird/awkward angles.

also, play around with your cam to see if you can manually adjust other settings like white balance, focus distance, metering, iso, and exposure. my cam has all of those except for exposure, so i can't take great night shots... like last night i wanted to shoot the meteor shower but no exposure setting handicaps me.

Get a Nikon D40 with the 18-55 kit lens and don't look back.

Here's a good in-depth review by someone who actually photographs things other than test charts http://kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40.htm

$525 at Adorama

I can vouch.

Just bought one myself as a matter of fact. It is, without a doubt, the best investment I've made on electronics in a LONG time. I don't think I fired off the shutter and caught an awful shot.

The money you'd spend is well worth the headaches that would go away as a result of ditching a P&S.

I don't want to jack your thread, but here are a few shots from a major n00b. I've only been shooting this thing for a week.
