Cutting down on spam

Perhaps a sort of forum posting and viewing restriction until they have posted a intro message in a certain section. Then someone has to reply to the thread, and then they are able to view other forums?

On some other forums you have to have X number of posts to existing threads before you can create a new thread.

They've been inserting spam into threads also, as replies.

What I'm proposing is an area for New Registered members to make an introduction. Before they can post in other threads, they MUST make an intro, and that intro must have replies from other members. Then they get free access afterwards.

Yea, we are taking some actions to try and cut down on the SPAMMERs. It's a slippery slope when making people jump through hoops to post, we want to keep the community as hassle free as possible, and not require every person to post. We welcome the lukers.

I understand exactly what you are saying, but can't lurkers lurk as guests?

We will never be spam free, but maybe we need something to more eaisly report it so that mods cen remove it and ban the accounts.

Maybe even a report spam button for members with a certain number of posts (say 50 or 100) that will automagically mark the thread and notify a mod?

Yes. But, there are only a handful of methods to allow certain privileges to a forum, basically: read, write, and moderate. If we take away their read privileges because they lurk: then they can't see anything. If we grant them write privileges: then they will spam. If we grant them moderate privileges: we are doomed.

There are a few other methods to approach this, and I think I have a pretty good solution worked out in my head, it's just getting the logic put into the system.

All-in-all, we do a pretty good job of squashing the spammers here with our team of moderators and admins. But, I would certainly like to have some rules and processes in place for new members.

As with anything, people will find away around the rules, you can slow them down, but never fully defeat.

Guys, just use the report post icon at the bottom left of the offending post. It's the one shaped like a YIELD sign.

It sends us all an email and we'll take care of them as appropriate

Well, how about a user account called SPAM so that all we as members have to do is C&P a link into a PM to that account, all mods can then chack the accounbt as they get a chance and deal with it appropriatly.

it seems like the spams always happen late at night. Around 2-3AM... i guess i'm probably one of the few people that's still awake at that time....
but that's when they always get here and spam

yeah, we all can help by letting the moderator and/or senior moderator know and by reporting the member under the avatar.

I've seen websites where they require new members to send info. to the moderator (full name, location, proof [myspace, friendster, etc.], date or birth and more). I've seen other website when they register, they require to skip some parts and just answer an math equation. though i think thats too much to roll on v6p.

Part of the problem is that because the image verification stuff is so common, it's not difficult to create ways to get around it.

One of my buddys is working on an interactive "human verification" system, where you might be required for example to match a coupe of shapes. Like drag a square to the square box, a circle to the circle box etc. It's a lot of custom work, but if it works, then you gotta do what you gotta do

one problem that I saw on 6thgenaccord was spammer inserting their spam within the threads as replies. To me, that's even more annoying then thread creations.

There you go, the link will help alot, it is not like we can defeat them, but knowing about the triangle will help to quickly get rid of the crap.
