hey. the other day one of my friends said something that i have never heard before. he mentioned that honda vtec engines take about 5k miles to break in so that the vtec really kicks in. a kid with an rsx-s claimed that after 6k miles, his car almost "shifted gears" and got noticeably faster. have any of you ever heard that? is this true of older vtec motors or is it also true of the newer i-vtec? i just want to clear this up

vtec is either On or OFF. Its a cam profile and does not need to be broken it. Vtec will serve the same function from the first mile to the last mile. i-Vtec is a little more complex, as seen in the second vid but its basically the same idea.

On the other hand, your valvetrain and other interanals(including cams) do need time to break in and mate with the other surfaces within the engine. Although, this process usually takes only a few hundred miles.

What likely happened is he heard that VTEC engages at 4600 or 6k RPM on his RSX and misunderstood and thought it was miles :).

Take a brand new motor, go fly down the 1/4 mile.
Come back 10,000 normal miles later, and its almost 100% that you will go faster :)

Great info! :up2:

It is I-Vtec I in that video though and not the basic I-Vtec. Basic I-Vtec doesn't have some of those features like the top chamber fuel injection. Some other K series engines don't have those special pistons and have both intake valves open on the low cam profile. Still about that same though :) .
