i live in UAE where the summer temps can get to 120 degrees and sometimes a bit more. will a CAI suck in the hot air above the roads?
also there is a lot (and i mean a lot!) of desert sand blowing around, will a CAI cause harm to my engine in the long run?

it will suck in hot air from the road yes, but that air will still probaby be cooler then the air the stock intake will suck in in that climate. the dust and sand should not matter as long as you clean the filter often.

The size of the particulates would have to be very small. We are talking micron small though would be able to pass thru the filter same as on all cars. Though you're in a rough environment the CAI you will have a better chance of pulling more particulates through. Just to put it in perspective on microns.

Eye of a needle 500 to 2000 microns
Grain of Sand 100 to 2000 microns
Human Hair 40 to 300 microns
Pollen 10 to 50 microns
Mold Spores 10 to 30 microns
Bacteria .07 to 10 microns
Typical Dust .01 to 10 microns
Paint Particles .05 to 3 microns
Tobacco Smoke .01 to 3 microns
Viruses .001 to .01 microns

From the top of the list would be not passable but getting easier as you go smaller. Hair is still much too large to pass through a filter and still smaller than sand.


The K&N CAI I got they provided a filter netting to help keep things out of the filter (mainly water droplets) it does also keep other bits of dirt off. You can buy one of these nets separately from a few other manufacturers.

Hey I can relate to your conditions. I live in tucson, az and on a dirt road since I bought the car brand new. The CAI has been on since the car had 1500 miles and now I have 65,000 miles. The only issue I have had over the years(just recent) is a sticky throttle body valve. Fixed that with some throttle body cleaner and was good to go! It popped my CEL on as a low idle control due to the sticky throttle body valve. I had the CEL reset after the cleaning and have no problems. I had the original filter from Injen on the CAI. I had cleaned it several times and re-oiled it over the years but I believe that is why I had the sticky throttle body due to the re-oiling of the filter. I replaced it with a K&N Filter about 1000 miles ago and it performs great.

Phoenix, Arizona here with a CAI. No problems at all, but yeah, clean that filter every 10k miles and you'll be fine.

take there advice clean the filter. The filter also has an oil coating that you can recharge that helps particles from going pass the filter since it get stuck on it.

Here in tucson we have been 108-110! Phoenix is gonna hit 116 today! crazy for being monsoon season!

Uh huh, come to Phoenix today, you'll take that back. Actually I'm originally from CT and lived in NY and MS as well, so I know all about humidity. When it gets to 115°+ it's just blazing hot. Although I do find myself hiking in this crazy weather for some reason, maybe because the heat has made me insane! :bonk:

I'd take 115 dry heat vs. 100 with 100% humidity that we get :p
i used to live in grand rapids mi so i am familiar with what you are talking about.

being here in tucson reminds me of baking in my oven! The dry heat just drains the fluid out of you. lol

100 with 100% humidity on the heat index is around 110...NY,CT doesn't get the humidity we get. Try Texas :p

socal has more smog so i win. lol.
You also get sub-par gas and have emissions testing...:p

Then again, you also have access to thousands of used parts for local pickup that I can't find for the life of me around here. :banghead: I'd probably still have my RSX if I lived out there and could buy used parts (see turbo/SC kit, etc..) lol

to sum it up, its perfectly fine to have a CAI even if you live in a very dusty/sandy environment. also a CAI will not cause any decrease in performance during the hot summer months right?

No, but it will decrease intake temp (increase performance) versus a short ram or OEM style intake when you're not moving. When moving they're about equal :)
