An engineer at www.acpt.com (they specialize in carbon fibre driveshafts) told me that the 2005 Mazda RX-8 (6-speed only) comes stock with a carbon fibre driveshaft, like the new Nissan 350Z. I contacted Mazda and they confirmed it was correct. The engineer also told me the Mitsubishi Montero also came with a carbon fibre driveshaft. I asked him over the phone how much would it cost for them to make me a carbon driveshaft, he said from $800-1800, only rear wheel drive applications and some all wheel drive, though. I asked how much for a 1968 Pontiac Firebird (400ci) he said around $1200 and he also said that the Mitsubishi Eclipse Talons equiped with all wheel drive (93-96) were one of the most expensive to build a driveshaft for. So if you like this idea, and it's not bad since some cars come with them from the factory, then get hooked up with the people at acpt.com, they said for now you have to send them your original driveshaft so they can make a copy, but in a month they will be able to do it by dimensions alone. I hope someone found this informative.

That is friggin cool. Pricey!!! but really cool.

Whats the benefit of a carbon fibre driveshaft? Does it mean that by replacing your aluminum driveshaft with carbonfibre causes less drivetrain loss by decreasing weight and adding structural rigidity?


Just wondering...
An aluminum driveshaft will bend and warp, however the carbonfibre driveshaft will not warp, however it will crack...so that might be a drawback.

Im just guessing these things, please correct me if im wrong.

SH-AWD System Layout

SH-AWD is a full-time all-wheel drive system that requires no driver interaction for operation. A torque transfer unit is bolted directly to the front-mounted transaxle. Attached to the front wheel differential's ring gear is a helical gear that provides input torque to the transfer unit. A short horizontal shaft and a hypoid gear set within the case turn the propeller shaft ninety degrees and move it to the vehicle center line. A lightweight carbon fiber reinforced composite propeller shaft carries power to the rear drive unit.
Propeller shaft is another name for drive shaft.

MAZDA MAKES EXTREME MOVE WITH RX-8 MOTORSPORT CONCEPT07-OCT-2004

Mazda Australia today unveiled the first of its "extreme cars", a turbocharged RX-8 Motorsport Concept, at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney.

The "extreme" RX-8, which was conceived by Mazda Australia’s motor sport manager Allan Horsley, is powered by a turbocharged and intercooled rotary engine that is expected to develop about 270 kilowatts of power (~362hp) and close to 350Nm (~258ftlbs) of torque.

The car also features 19-inch wheels and tyres, a high performance racing brake package, retuned suspension and Mazdaspeed body kit parts for a more aggressive look.

The 2004 RX8 6 speed's have the carbonfiber driveshaft! There is even a guy who broke it and his tranny on a 14.3 1/4 mile run, bone stock but had his tires deflated to 14 psi? Even with this driveshaft the car exhibits extreme wheelspin and wheel hop with high rpm launches. Needless to say, as excellent a car as the RX8 is, one thing it's not is a drag car. Most excellent in the corners though!

Acura calls it a "Lightweight carbon fiber reinforced composite propeller shaft" for the production model. Basically, the same thing you said.



I guess since it's so short, they didn't need to make it completely out of carbon fiber. And yes, I know this thread is old but it took me some time to find that pic and then I forgot about this up until now :p .

Heres the thing though... they say it has direct gas injection, is that the same as direct fuel injection, cause if it is (thinking it is) then thats pretty amazing, just thought they would have better numbers, still good though.
