DO NOT EVER use Permatex Windshield Repair Kit

Story...I bought my car with a rock chip in the top driver side of my windshield about 0.7 of an inch in diameter. Trying to fix things myself where I can, I was introduced to this "professional" windshield repair kit:

There were 2 at advanced auto parts, one was $6 this one was $11 so I bought this one. This turned out to be a big mistake.
I got to this step:

I followed instructions to the letter. After I put the resin in the tube that's on my windshield and put in the syringe, which I pulled up as shown (and instructed) and locked it in place, I sat in my car and looked up at the top of the windshield and here's what I saw:

It looks like my windshield couldn't handle the pressure that this syringe made and there was a crack formed about 6 inches long at the time I noticed it.
I immediately removed the syringe, but it was too late. (The instructions say hold the syringe in the position above for 10 Minutes.) I pulled it out within one minute. By the time I went upstairs to get my camera and take some pics, the crack expanded to 10 inches long. 3 days later now, the crack has expanded to half way through my windshield and bothers me while driving.

Here's what it looks like from the outside:
(before I used this product it was just the rock chip and now you can see it's a lot worse)

SUMMARY: I followed all the instructions and this kit actually ruined my windshield to the point of me actually needing a new one now. The damage this kit caused is the long expanding crack has expanded halfway through my windshield now, 3 days later.

I will need a new windshield now. I have searched online and people say this thing doesn't work, but no one has complained of it actually destroying their windshield.

There is no disclaimer on the box or warning that this may break the windshield. I am going to call them tomorrow to see if they will stand by their product and help me in any way.

Does anyone have any advice?

sometimes your insurance might cover the cost of a new windsheild , but you just have to pay 75 bucks, call them up and see. They come to your house. Regardless, get it replaced.

sorry abouyt that man
Thanks for the kind words man, but I'm pretty sure it's the whole $250 deductible :( It was really hard to believe, within a matter of minutes, my windshield was ruined.
This isn't the product, it's the chip. It should say in the instructions that some chips are too big to be repaired and may crack. Same thing happened to me when I bought my car...dealer tried to repair it and it just ended up cracking.

How did it happen in the first place? If a truck threw it up, the trucking company would be liable.

just consider that it is your windshield and the money will be well spent, regardless of cost because your windshield need to be strong and visble to see out of. You will feel better once you have the new one. I compare a windshield to pantyhose, once it was a knick, it will run like nothing

not necessarily if the rock was in the roadway and the driver was following too close.
if you have rockchips on your window which might bug you and minimize your view under the sun glare then you know your in for a new window...your wasting more time trying to do this yourself it been proven wrong a few times as well
I had a new honda one installed for 450 with insurance and then the second time i got the regular one for 150 installed..... just call around
only if it comes off a gravel truck does that fly 99vteccoupe.

You're right, the instructions say "The Windshield Repair Kit repairs damages not exceeding 1.25 inch in diameter."
I just measured my rock chip's diameter, it is 3/8 of an inch. Well within the accepted limits. This is why I thought I was safe. The only warning in the instructions is about the resin coming into contact with painted surfaces may cause damages. This is why I feel I have been screwed over.

I don't know how this happened in the first place, I stated above that I purchased the car with this rock chip. It passed inspection so I didn't worry about it.

Yes, unfortunately that's how I thought about this crack at the time. But the reality is it was out of my view and in the last 6 months got maybe a tiny bit larger. It was still only 3/8 of an inch in diameter.
that sucks ... sorry to see that.

3 months after i bought my car, a rock cracked my windshield on the way to Las Vegas! Cost $450 to replace. My deductible was $500 so I ended paying for it all.

i don't know if that company is going to do anything for you but it doesn't hurt to at least call and explain your experience.

good luck.
In Florida they replace your windshield for free if it cracks. I guess that is how the insurance laws work here. Check with your insurance company.
i actually used the same exact kit to repair a crack a couple of weeks ago...mine came out fine but i was afraid i was going to crack it more like you did

but yeah...a waste of money
That sucks. Sounds like you're just gonna have to bite the bullet and get a new windshield.

I've had 2 windshields replaced by trucks kicking up rocks.
i have the same exact rock chip on my windshield!!....thanx for the warning on this product
For what it's worth, I had mine replaced for like $135, no insurance just the $135. It's been fine for a couple of years, actually holds up better than the OEM windshield. That thing had a new chip or crack in it every month it seemed.
I dunno, i repaired a chip in my windshield with the same exact kit. I followed the instructions to a T though....
Sorry to hear man. I use the same kit on my girl's Jetta and it worked perfectly.

What place was this? local shop or a national car repair shop?
