I'm not talking about those huge aluminum double (or triple:D) deck spoilers. I'm sure they are big enough to provide some downforce. What about the various factory spoilers available for our car. Has anyone noticed difference such as high speed stability after installed?

they don't work, purely cosmetics, the car is too heavy for the spoiler to come in effect. Spoilers on work on modified cars that have dropped all unecessary weight, and upgraded to a lighter body. U won't feel anything gaurantee. The are just designed for show.

no wait....what are you crazy? havent you seen those bangin airplane wing i have on the back of my car. i mean man you can mistake that for the new a 380..

im telling you when my 4 banger 1.5l hits 75mph i got downforce to the max...

and it makes my car look cool, i mean it weights 50 lbs dont it so i got downforce,

purely for show hahaa..

even so, we have a fwd drive car. we dont need rear downforce.

I was hoping it would alleviate the drop throttle oversteer problem....

you could just not get off the throttle.

I added the decklid spoiler and I did it only for "looks." I have no idea if it improved the "hi-speed" driving dynamics of my car since I've only hit 120 mph once with the car...and that was totally stock.

My opinion is that spoilers "work" if you race the car or drive at hi speeds a lot since they are designed to keep the rear planted at triple digit speeds. Other than that...they are for looks and do add a few pounds of weight to the rear.

As far as hi speed stability...I did notice a HUGE difference from stock when I added my lowering springs, rear sway bar, Brembo drilled rotors and ceramic brake pads. Car felt more planted (no floating) and stopped more confidently! :D

That's a characteristic of front wheel drive cars...and for a rear wing to be effective, youd have to be moving at speeds high enough that youd be insane to be trying to take a corner where you experience off-throttle oversteer ;)

Want to get rid of it? Try playing with sway bars..:cool:

honda was able to lower the Cd from .3 to .29 using a lip spoiler and redesigned wheels for the accord hybrid. but i think it's mostly the wheels.

That the deck lid/lip spoiler decreases drag still throws me off ..

I understand that the aero perturbation fins on the Evo's are for real (the golf ball effect for say), but how does a deck lid decrease aero drag?
I suppose it must be causing the same effect as the fins, but from the looks it just doesn't convince me yet.

Anyway, for factory OEM wing spoilers .. I'm an aerospace engineer and I say that THEY DO provide rear down force!
.. about 15 lbs .. even when you park the car ... your spare tire does the same too .. about 30 lbs :D

my only guess is that the lip spoiler creates flow separation, and thus downward trailing vortices. this in turn forms stopping vortices upward over the trunk. and that airflow has a pressure greater than that of a rearward stalled flow, thus decreasing drag as well as forming slight downforce.

i could be wrong, but that's my theory.

Audi TT

I do recall that when the Audi TT first came out it had no spoiler. People complained about stability issues at speed on the autobahn. Next year models had one, and a recall was issued to install one.

Then again, with 70mph speed limits I can't imagine why we'd need one :angel:

If I understand what you're saying, I'd say my assumptions are the same.
The rear lip causes regional turbulent flow to re-energize the flow above trunk & rear windshield. This causes more overall air flow to remain laminar.

I suppose the benefit of the more laminar flow above the trunk/rear windshield is more than increased wake (low pressure region) behind the trunk caused by the lip spoiler.

Is there anyway we can oreder the Hybrid lip spoiler .. or is it the same as the standard lip spoiler?

yeah the hybrid spoiler is the same as the regular lip spoiler. but you should check out the wheels, they're probably contributing the most. they pretty much the v6 wheels, with most of the open area covered up.

Go to a open lot and check out the drop throttle oversteer....I tried and no go.....I guess if its wet its possible but here in So. Cal. it doesnt rain enough...just slow it down when its raining......Hell...there's enough accidents here in L.A just slow it down......
