J30 custom, J32A2, J35A* swap

Based on flood of recent PMs I will be going through some write up with personal observation/experience and suggestion to those hardcore individuals who want to do custom J30A1 or swaps with either J32A2 or J35A* and what parts interchangable. That way it will be clear of what makes sense to do and what not.

I will start after lunch :D.

So let me get this right. You're using the 3.2 Block w/3.5 Internals and 3.2 heads. Whoa this is getting confusing!

You gotta a link for ThinJim's plans.
Crank/rods make 3.5L, blocks are the same ;)

Well goals are to drop CR down enough to push a lot of boost. 11+ maybe in the range of lets say 15-20.
To boost that high you need custom forged internals with 9.0:1 CR, huge injectors and different FPR along decent FMU.

I ended up with the J35A4...it just came in today......
So now just the RL pistons and I'm set?

Yep, '05 RL pistons and rings.

or could the j32a2 heads fit on the 02+ j35 blocks without valve clearance issues? I'm still kinda scared to go with the 11:1 CR with 125 shot of nitrous....
J32 heads fit J35 block, but you have to modify Odyssey pistons or your J32 valves will be bent.

allmotor_2000 running on 10.5:1 CR with 6psi which is not that much smaller then 11:1 and he's fine with 200whp over stock with correct tuning. If you concern about high CR you have 2 choices: modify Odyssey pistons to ~ 10.25:1 or get H20 injection with 11:1

Also, does the 6 speed tranny from the CLS really fit the J35A4 block? Because this is the path i'm taking....
I doubt since that block designed to fit auto tranny. Double check with your shop though. If you want 6MT you'd better go with complete CL-S 6MT swap mess or buy CL-S 6MT and enjoy ;)

check pics of those 3.5 pistons as well as valve size difference I posted on page 2 to get an idea of needed clearance ;)

There are also differences in cranshaft/rods for 3.5 as well as blocks. I found 03-04 MDX and '05 Odyssey doesn't fit
I disagree. What doesn't fit???
*

I'm using the 03-04 mdx crank on my build, which is a beefy forged steel thing of beauty. (recently coated with some "stuff") The 01-02 mdx is a cast crank, that's why there is a 300 - 400.00 difference between the cranks.

*

Rods between the 3.5 motors, regardless of year will interchange unless the rod and or main bearing journal diameter changed, and I don't think it has. The length of the 3.5 rod is the same regardless of what year it is. 05 and up 3.5 use powder metal rods which in my opiinion suck in comparison to the forged rods you'll find on some 03-04 mdx 3.5. (that's a trick in itself) The rest are cast. For auto makers, it's the profits, the powder metal rods are cheaper because it takes less machining.

*

As for pistons, I'm using a 9.0:1 custom turbo pistons. Nothing about these pistons are similar to the stock ones other than the diameter. Ring lands and pin placement all custom design as is the valve pockets made deeper for special cams.

*

Just a word about pistons for those who venture into the stroker world. If you use the cls heads, you will have to modify the stock valve pockets on the stock pistons.

*

Good luck with all this, should turn out interesting with all the different approaches.

Tom,

I purchased 04 MDX complete block and it doesn't bolt up our transmission and that forged crank is completely different shape (short) comparing to Odyssey '01-02, so we ditched that option. I sold that block and got bare '03 CL-S block and NEW 02 Odyssey crankshaft that will fit along with rods/bearings and '05 RL pistons for Types S valve clearance on heads.

That '02 Odyssey crankshaft has the same length as Type S crank where you place the crank pulley whereas '04 MDX crankshaft is much shorter and no good for Type S block according to my shop. Thus, I don't see how you can fit and run '04 MDX crank on yours even if its manual. Did your shop assemble MDX crank/rods on your block? And I assume you use CL-S 6 block, correct?

the 01-03 cls block, and 01-02 mdx block, basic blok without internals are the same casting and honda part number. your right about the transmission attachment points being different on the 03-04 mdx. the crank out of the 03-04 mdx, according to my builder, fits onto the blok i'm using, which is the cls blok. I have no problem with that fitment, makes me wonder though.

Correct, you can use '01-02 Odyssey or '01-02 MDX or '01-02 CL-S blocks.
And '03-04 MDX crankshaft will fit the '01-03 CL-S block, however it won't work since it too short to put CL-S crank pulley along with belt (per my shop). My guys tried and it didn't work, thus I wonder if your block is assembled to confirm?
That's why I went with '02-04 Odyssey (same part #) for the crank/rods/bearing with CL-S block (better sleeves) since length of the crank is identical.

If you want I post the crank I'm using here with indication of length, so you'll see what I'm talking about ;)

Well, if my advisor/builder has made a mistake, he'll just have to find a solution, like using the 3.5 pully and belt setup. Guess I'll cross that bridge in the near future. the pully/belt system on the mdx can't be that different from the cl's. maybe thats the problem some guys have had with the ac bracket that aligns the ac to the pulley. perhaps the 3.5 cover should be used? Send me a pic of your crank,, check your pm .

yes, post the a pic of the crank, send me your email, i'll send you a pic of my crank and post them together. also, can you get the measurement of the length of your crank. (not the one in your pants either) hehe

Will do ;)

I placed your pic next to mine and my Odyssey measured at 1 5/8" (notice the red lines) where you mound crank pulley. Try to get the size of yours and let me know, but to me yours looks short. The full length of my crank will be measured late afternoon (at the shop).

BTW, I will use '04 S2K injectors (370cc) vs CL-S (270cc) and run E-Manage up top only. They fit right in on CL-S fuel rail with no modification needed.

Left to right : honda s2000, cl-s

And Vortech SFMU will replace CT FPR for better fuel adjustments and lower fuel pressure (see chart) at around 7psi.

Another thing just strike me - CL-S pistons (10.5:1 CR) can be used with 3.5 swap which are similar in shape to '05 RL (11.0:1) but dome is a little shorter thus less CR.

Or those who want less CR, get Odyssey pistons (10.0:1 CR) and modify for CL-S valve clearance (assuming J32A2 heads are used)

Thanks, yep this thread is very helpful for future 3.5 swaps

if the crank I'm using is shorter, that's ok, it is still used in a j35 on a mdx, so I suppose I will have to use what is used on the front of that motor and make adjustments from there for the belt alignments.

The cls pistons are a good idea, but are the pin locations the same?

Thanks for the comparision photos, I'm going to head over to the shop and do a little measurement dis mornin. Thanks Serge!

Yep, pin locations the same on CL-S pistons. Let me know the numbers on your crank and I post it for comparison.

Oh, yeah Vortech credit goes to TAG for trying it first ;) :up2:

You still pioneer in succesfull 3.5 swap and other products :D
