Specifically, what will hook up better in a straight line without being quick wearing drag radials? Quick right turns have always meant some wheel spin and/or full on traction control activation followed by shifting into 2nd at 15 mph because of wheelspin. With a j-pipe now, it's worse. Probably going to need tires in the next 3000 miles or so, right now I have 205/60/16 Yokohama YK580s on 16 x 6.5 RSX wheels. I prefer to keep the wheels (very light) and 16" tires due to the cost and how much I drive (30k miles a year). One option is sticking with the tires I have, looks like I'll get 50k miles on a 60k mile warranty, just go with a 215 or 225/55/16 size instead. Or is there a brand that anyone has found that is pretty good in a straight line that you can still get decent mileage out of?

I had Yokohama YK520s, Michelin HX-MXM4 Pilots and Bridgestone Potenza RE-760s on my Maxima (225/50/17) and none of them hooked up particularly well either. Or I am I just SOL with a front wheel drive that doesn't have limited slip?

I have Federal Evo's 235-45-17. They run a size wide and shorter so they are really like 245-35-17. They hook and corner great. Wet.... Ehhh... Nothing impressive but not dangerous either. They are 240 tread wear and I have 10-14k (forget) on them and they look very good. I drive pretty hard around any corner I can find. I'm not sure about how try are on gas. Didn't see any change between Conti. Pro contacts, Achilles, or these. I only get like 21-23mpg cuz I now drive alllll city and drive the city hard.

Hope that help. Achilles aren't bad either. Contis are nice but don't get the price. Much rather have the Federals

R1 or Rivals from BFGoodrich are supposedly on or above par with those Yokohamas and the Potenzas, with much better wet control. R1 has less wet capability than the Rival, however they do have more grip. At a price.

I have not personally tested these however the tire specialist over at Motortrend seems to agree with the posted claims from BFGoodrich about the Rivals.

Rival at 150-170 a tire is not terrible on price either. R1 will cost a pretty penny for a full set. Hopefully I can soon at least get the front two on Rivals soon.

Michelin Pilot Super Sports. Great all around tire, with really good straight line performance.

scott, go to tire rack. You can really have some fun with this site. It will tell you the diameter of the tires for different sizes so your speedo will be accurate(im sure you already know this haha). Personally if you were sticking with the 205-60-16's I would recommend the Kumho PA31's(tested high on tire rack). It is their new performance all season that is slotted just under the Kumho Ecsta 4X. Now if you bump your size to 225/55-16 then I would go with the Kumho ecsta 4x. I have that tire on my accord(215/50-17). It is the best tire I have owned. I have 20K on them now and they have more than half of their life left(6/32 tread left). The grip is amazing for straight line and handling. Plus they are priced low.

Based on how much I drive, Kumho's sound really good. Hard to justify $150-180 per tire if you have to replace them every year.

^ Not in his size. What you are looking for is max summer tires. The hankook v12 evo is great, sticky and cheap, but not in your size. The Dunlop direzza dz101 looks great with the aggressive tread pattern, has excellent dry traction, comes in the perfect plus width size 225/55r16 and only costs about $100 a tire.

Only problem is they wear fast, and at 30k miles a year, probably go through 2 sets. :(

I use a 200 tread wear tire for autocross. I am running the Dunlop star specs. They are great tires. Others I would like to try are the hankook rs-3(I used to have the older version). The rivals and star spec 2 are also options. Continentals are good in the rain.

I would suggest changing to a wider wheel and tire. I am running 8.5" wide wheels with 255 tires. I want to go even bigger.

If you are going thru a set of tires in 15k miles on street you might want to get your alignment situated. I autocross and only drive my car for fun aggressively shifting at redline and making tires squeal around corners. I can still get over 15,000 miles.

Soft compound, sticky tires wear out quickly. No way around that. And my alignment is spot on. I have 45k miles on the Yokohama YK580s so far. I just don't want to over-compromise on traction and end up with a tire that wears out quickly. I have a friend who had a 1000 hp, 224 mph standing mile, twin turbo Ford GT that he could afford to replace his Hoosier DOT drag radials every 6 weeks. Obviously don't want to get that extreme. :laugh: Need something that will last 30-35k miles (with proper alignment) which kind of puts tires with 200 or less rated treadwear off the list. Probably have to go with something along the lines of 300-400 treadwear rating. Current tires are 600 so I went too far the other way towards long life with the Yokos.

Ended up getting the new Goodyear Eagle Sport A/S V rated tires. 215/55/16 size. Less than 1/2" difference in height vs the 205/60/16, nearly an inch more tread width. Excellent reviews so far on it, straight line traction is definitely improved. Tires respond more quickly too, glad I ordered the TL-S rear anti-roll bar, probably need a front upper strut bar to tighten the car up enough to take advantage of the extra grip.

50k mile warranty too.

I had 200 treadwear Potenza RE-11 235/40-18, which is an Autocross tire. I would still shred those coming out of corners if i got on the gas too quick. Lack of LSD really kills performance

A couple quick right turns with about half throttle didn't break the tires loose, big change from the other ones. Definitely feel the road more with the stiffer sidewalls. Very little tire noise.

Tread width is more than I thought. The Yokohamas have a tread width of 6.2" in the 205/60/16 size (even the 225/55/16 are only 7.1" tread width and weigh almost 4 pounds more) while the Goodyears have 7.6" tread width and weigh a half pound less each than the tires I had. :)

Look up size 225/50/16. It can fit the rim and is 1/2 and inch smaller than stock.

Riken raptors are great tires and you can pick them up pretty cheap they are made by Bridgestone or some other big brand... My accord corners great on them and they grip like hell compared to my toyos
