So I went and looked. What a piece of ****. What may have once been a fun sedan to play with has clearly fallen by the wayside. It ended up be a friend of my friend's brother-in-law, so I didn't feel bad when I let him know what I thought.

The paint was hosed up pretty good, and one of the tailights was cracked up pretty good. No visible body damage, and I think I could've gotten over the paint and exterior. I notice the RF tire is slightly flat. The back end also appears to sag a bit

Then I checked out the interior. I personally think this is a nice window into how the car is treated overall. I keep my interior clean as hell, and have nothing lying around in there, it looks like the car does from the showroom, but that's just me. So I look inside, and the dash is cracked. A lot. Like big long cracks, and spider web cracks in multiple places. The front seats have very cheap and very worn covers on them, and the leather underneath looks abhorrid. The back seats have tons of rips and tears in them, more cracking here too. I can find no floormats. The spare tire cover from the trunk and some carpeting are in the back seat haphazardly. There are drink cups and wrappers in the front seat. There are pine cone needles on the dash, along with a few other places inside the car. The dash and steering wheel are also filthy with what looks to be tree pollen. I notice the window is already rolled down, and wonder to myself how long it's been that way or if it even rolls up.

I ring the doorbell and a mildy pathetic Jeff Spiccoli wannabe answers. He looks to be about as sharp as a sack of wet leather. He has the keys, we go and I get him to pop the hood. After my initial examination, I was pretty ready to split, but my curiosity got the best of me. I check out the engine bay, and oddly enough, it's not as abhorrid as the rest of the car. I see some issues, some rust spots, but not knowing much about the Yamaha 3.0, I don't really know what to think. I get him to start it up, and it sounds ok, no major vibrations, squeaking, squealing, rattling, etc. I hop in, slowly rev it and can't aurally detect any major problems. As I let the engine run a bit, Spiccoli tells me about how they'd once had plans to turn it into a SCCA car. I ask about the required maintenance, he stares at me blankly. I take that as a no, and we head out for a test drive. This requires another family member, I'm assuming Jeff's dad, to move his truck out of the way. He comes outside, passing me a contemptuous look as he callously strolls by, and moves the truck.

At this point I am informed that the power seat motor is broken on the driver's seat. Upon a quick investigation, I discover that there is no way to adjust the front seat. At all. I contort myself into the seat discovering that in fact does more. It rocks back and forth. Ideal perhaps for an 80 y/o who's social security cut has forced her to move into the car, but I am greatly annoyed. At this point I go to release the parking brake. It does nothing. At this point we discover that the parking brake is not to be pressed in, it doesn't release unless you have a screwdriver handy. Jeff informs me that he's "never really used that before", and a brother, who shoots me an icy glare similar to dad's comes out and unfcuks the parking brake. I check my rearview, and I discover something out of place; an empty spot where the rearview mirror should be. Great, those things are overrated anyways. As I get ready to put it in gear, brother advises me to "watch my a$s" because the brakes are "really fcuked up."

I beat the transmission into gear and coast out of the driveway. Oddly, the clutch feels decent and has decent grab. No major noises. I put it in first, and we drive off, at which point I'm presented with, "Hey, you know this thing doesn't have AC, right?" ARE YOU FCUKING KIDDING ME? ARIZONA, 120* TEMPS, AND NO AC? I interrogate Jeff as to the whereabouts of said AC, and he informs me that it was in the trunk when they bought it. Right on, I know that's where I like to keep my AC compressor. At this point, perhaps my brain realizing that there will not soon be any relief from the blistering sun the sweating starts. Yippee.

I battle the transmission for the right to engage first gear, I win, and off we go. We come up to the end of the professor's street quickly, and I brake. The car doesn't respond, I brake more. The car responds. It screams and groans at me, but I finally coerce it into stopping. At this point I look over at my passenger and inquire as to whether or not I should be taking it on a major streets. He replies that he's done so for some time. I summon my sack, and head towards Elliot Blvd. The brake b!tches and and whines at every stop. People are looking at me strangely. My heart flutters in fear every time I'm required to stop. When the war in Iraq initially kicked off, I was involved in port security operations in Umm Qasr. I have been shot at, bullets over my head, and even a couple into the metal steering console on the RHIB boat. I long to be back there, I am scared. I continuously battle the tranny for gear selection. Well sh!t, it I think, time to open this b!tch up. We proceed along Elliot on over to the access road that runs alongside the 101. By this point, we are both hot, nasty, sweaty, but apparently my passenger takes a different standpoint on hygiene than I do. I casually go to roll down the other windows. Nothing happens. The driver's side window is still down, but a vengeful God has apparently disabled my best means of salvaging my olfactry sense. We hop on the access road.

At this point, I'm pretty sure I'm not buying this thing, so it's time to pay back Spiccoli for wasting part of my Sunday. I hammer it in first, and the engine responds nicely. I get up to around 5k rpms, and don't notice the secondaries opening up, at least not like on my Maxima. I fight for second, the tranny succumbs to my overwhelming machismo, and we continue on up the speedo. Top end of second sucks as well, and 3rd gear valiantly fights me as well. I am victorious again, and continue accelarating. As I understand it, 3rd gear in the SHO was personally developed by Jesus, so I'm anticipating finally being impressed. If anything, the car seems to kinda fall on its face a bit in the upper rpms and is creeping past 90 (IIRC) pretty lathargically. As we start the deadly process of decellaration, I ask the nose rapist next to me if he knows anything about the variable intake. Oddly, he does, and lets me know that sometimes it tends to stick. I ask him, "When, like when the engine's on?" and he stares blankly at me.

The return voyage to is house is quiet though not devoid of death defiance, and we pull up to the house. Along the way I am forced to wipe off dust and spores because my hands are becoming caked with them. Like enough to be dangerous. I instinctively set the parking brake realizing my mistake a half second late, and the rapist looks at me like I just asked to sleep with his parakeet. I clamor to ge out of the rot-box and discover that the inside door handle doesn't work. Fortunately, the window doesn't go up, so this makes access to the outside handly thankfully easy. We get out, I spend a few more seconds perusing the car with my eyes, and out of pure, unadulterated curiosity I ask him how flexible he is on the price. He informs me maybe a little, and I can't help but snicker. The snicker turns into full-blown laughter and I asked him if he was high, joking, or just retarded. He proceeds to informs me that the engine is in good shape, and a refute this with my mental notes about the trannny, interior, AC, exterior and the thousands I would have to pour into this car to make it even marginally acceptable enough for even my mother-in-law to plant her ass in.

At this point he attempts to debate me. He points out that he really liked this car and takes a lot of pride in it. I grabbed a handful of pine needles and ask him if he loves it to the point that he's going to start a garden. I stick a few of them in the foam that's poking up from various areas of the seat and exclaim how cool and rustic it looks. I tell him best of luck selling the car, though perhaps he would be better insuring it and pushing it across the border. I hop in the GTP, head home basking in my ice-cold AC, swathed in leather and new car smell from the freshener under the passenger seat and proceed to violate a G35 sedan with a popped collar asshat behind the wheel, noting how useful that rearview mirror can really be.

Anyways, I was pretty dissappointed. I'm a DIY, fix it up kinda guy, but this car was by no stretch worth the time. Best yet, he's selling it for $2k, $800ish above bluebook.

secondaries open up at 4,600rpm IIRC, even with them opened, the TQ band still slowly falls, which is why the car feels slower than its trap speed suggest. Amazing that the car will trap 92-94mph stock in 5speed form.

sho are prety gay. they look like ****. my freind once had ne n he thought he could take on 3000gt's cause of his "special" motor. he said it was the best sleeper ever made. but his was mint condition n he got it for 3k i thik, so at least he gt a decent 1

Great write up :) . He's better off selling the engine alone and sending the rest of the car to be smashed into a cube :laugh: .

Nice writing skills, props. :)

My younger bro had a 93 SHO, but it was in slightly better condition. He paid $800 for it, but it had 200k on it. It was decently taken care of though, but he had to put about $2k into it for it to really be proper & reliable. It would have probably lasted until 250k, but he beat on it and blew the trans trying to show off to a Vette. :rolleye2:

lol why is conan obsessed with the taurus ?

he mentions it regularly when talking about cars...

he said one time, that he drives one ? talk about thrifty, damn......

Just keep looking man, theres good ones out there. Dont worry about all the guys that laugh about it being a "Taur-ass" etc etc, brush em off. Those are just ignorant people that only appreciate a car for what it is, not what it does.

Didn't have the patience to read the short story in the original post, but an SHO mildly maintained form will hand an accord its' ass. See my sig for my ~220 whp SHO 5 speed w/a quaife but needless to say I utilize my accord as a daily driver and winter vehicle. My SHO is one of a kind, but if you go to www.shoforum.com you'll find a following of people devoted and helpful like no other. No offense to this forum, but the technical data and wisdom there is far superior and regardless if it's a taurus platform, the SHO is a piece of art for 1989. The motor is still competitive today hp to displacement wise and the secondaries open @ 3950 RPM FYI. Like I said, no offense intended but give respect where respect is due my friends :friday:

I'm not giving any disrespect, if I thought that way I wouldn't have been looking for a SHO to buy. This SHO was a piece of ****, through and through, that's all there is to it.

As for the other people here bagging on it, something to get used to on this forum. ;) If it's not a Honda it's crap, and moreso if it's not an import in general. You think it's bad in the "Other V6" forums, check out the Honda specific forums.

Edit: I also don't have an Accord, and there's not a car in my garage anything short of a boosted SHO would touch. Please don't lump us together. :)

Well..we do try to keep bashing to a minimum, considering the fact that half the owners of V6P.net and probably more than half of the moderators no longer own their Accords ;)

Great write-up on that SHO test! Almost got me in trouble at work when I just burst out laughing for no apparent reason that my workmates could see....

SHO's in good condition are really hard to find right now. A couple years back, price finally dropped on them and all these kids started buying and bashing on 'em. I know because I was included, I bought one when I was 17 and replaced the tranny a few months later. A few spirited trips to 7k rpm, secondaries screaming at 4-7k and I was hooked. I sold that car and got my escort rallywagon, which is now turbocharged, and my probe, which i will be doing a 3.2 SHO v6 swap in this spring. I've now learned the importance of maintenance and treating performance engines well. And as much as i miss my SHO, I love the other two more, and it shows with the attention I give them!

Basically, keep looking because they are amazing cars (a bit heavy) but great for a daily driver. Find a grandma that is selling hers, they are the best for being in good cond. I see granny's in SHO's that are beautiful all the time.

I'd looked for one more senior-citizen oriented, but they were all autos, and some of the normal "extra" routine maintenance doesn't happen. This one was definitely beaten on, and they didn't seem to take care of any aspect of the car.

Really? because i see quite a few 1st gen's with older people driving them. And the 1st gens are all 5spds.
