I go to school about an hour away from my home. I currently hav an apt up there but come fall im movin out. I hav a 7th gen, dont get me wrong, but commuting every day back and forth is gonna take a toll on my ride aside from the fact that if it snows im stranded because my car is lowered. Thats why, im thinkin of buying a beater.

What do you all think is a perfect beater car. One that will take me back and forth, about 100 miles, 4 days a week? I was thinkin of a honda passport, simply because if it snows ill still be able to get to school and because its a honda.

It also has to be $3-4K worth.


How much mileage is 2 much mileage?

You want a reliable car and great mileage. Get a toyota carolla, those care are perfect beater rides, and if you want a car that is more manly go after a civic.

I dont think 3-4K and reliability go to well in the same sentence.
I mean hoopty is defined as a piece of junk car. Usually cheap and/or broken down. Can be any size, make or model, but must (or should) be embarrassing to drive for some reason, such as when you bump the stereo all the plastic "effects" you have hot-glued to the exterior rattle, instantly betraying the cheapness of your bling.

Civic all the way, but you are going to have to put some effort into finding a decent one in that price range, look for a private seller not a stealership.

Escort (more reliable than most think), Neon (same). They can be found at really good prices compared to Civics and Toyotas. If you want to go super cheap and super mileage, a SOHC Saturn S-Series.

:and1: GM makes a damn good beater! Cavalier 2.2lt or Saturn S series. Easy as hell to fix and parts are very abundant (plus cheap)

Yea these cars are REALLY cheap. A 95 honda runs around 2-3k. a 95 neon is a flat 1k. But do you guys think they could handle 100 miles a day? I dont want to get stranded out on the freeway. I really had a bad experience with a ford mustang that i use to have and it was NEW when i bought it. Thats why i feel weird about american cars.

The old stigmatism about Domestic Cars being unreliable, and Hondas being super good, isn't really all that applicable anymore. If maintained, any car with a decen track record will last just as long. I saw a lot of 200K+ mile Escorts, Neons, Saturns, and (as mentioned by JHAWK) Cavaliers when I was shopping for my beater. Sure there are lemons out there, but I see Hondas and Toyotas on the side of the freeway too. It's pretty much come to whoever takes care of their car best, will get the most life out of it.

Disclaimer: There are "bad" models out there. I've been told that the P/T Cruiser isn't a very reliable car, and of course... 6th Gen AV6 has a janky transmission (but mine is still currently alive and operating well).

I was lookin at Geo prizm though, and those are even cheaper.

Toyota corolla. My wife owned 2 of these as beater cars during her college years....150+ miles, not one problem with these cars. At the same time, my 92 pontiac grand am, not even 5 years old had tons of problems at 60k and I babied that car since it was the first car I've ever actually "owned".

I think the Consumer Reports charts as well as old JD Power reports says it all. Domestics as beaters just can't hack it. If you want problem free beater car, go w/ a well-maintained used Toyota or Honda. I would avoid older domestics like the plague..even well-maintained ones. They rattle, they squeak, and parts are constantly breaking. It doesn't matter whether it was well-maintained or not simply because domestics are poorly built with very poor quality control. While in an well-maintained Toyota or Honda, all you need are oil changes for the most part. After 17 years of owning multiple cars from a 81 Chevy Citation to a 2001 Mercedes S430, I think I've seen quite a lot of cars;)

Geo Prizm = Toyota Carrola just rebadged.

haha my cousin had a geo prizm, man it was a beater but it was really reliable all he did was change oil and it didnt die until 252,000 ;)

haha i should take pics of her :D
