I have a D1. I installed a cheap <$100 dvd player and hooked it up to my D1. I also bypassed the parking brake for navi operation.

I understand that with a D3 you cannot listen to CDs while your Navi DVD is being used. That means that every time you need to set a new destination, you will need to switch out whatever CD you are listening to with the navi DVD. For me, that is very inconvenient.

i'll take the non-motorized d3 any day over the d1. Pioneer N1 and N2 were notorious for faulty ribbon cables because of the motorized screens. The d3 looks much nicer than most units also since it sits flush.

I've got a D3. You have to load the navi DVD to plot your route, then you can remove the DVD and put your MP3 disc or DVD back in. It will be good for up to 100 miles...not too big of a hassle.

Better yet, get a 160GB iPOD and hook it up via the iPOD cable and enjoy full control of your music and video library directly from the touch screen. Then you can leave the navi DVD in :)

I don't have any complaints about my D3 since I have an iPod hooked up to it for videos and music. I've bypassed it for video playback and navi functionality while driving. One thing I don't like about the D3 though is you can't sort destination results in order of distance. You can do a "Vicinity Search", but you can't enter in keywords or names. So really it's one or the other =/. What I have to do is do a search by keyword/name and then plot them one-by-one on the map and read the travel distance.
