I notice vibration in steering wheel at any speed. Even driving very slow it is noticable when the steering wheel is turning. For example when I turn and let go of the steering wheel it doesn't get back to straight smoothly (that's really noticable even at very slow speeds).

At highway speeds it feels like I need to balance the wheels only it does it all the times.

I only noticed it a day after taking the car for an alignment.

Any ideas?

Take off and re-install your rims, sounds like they are not seated right, could be something ewlse, but this is free to do and check first.

Did that already. I have aftermarket rims and using hubcentric rings. I'm thinking maybe the rings need to be replaced so I have new ones coming on the way. I inspected for leaks/torn boots/bad bushings and can't find anything wrong.

Jack her up in the front and grab the wheel and check for play by trying to rock it with hands at 9 and 3, then 12 and 6.

There is some play in the 9-3 position when both wheels are jacked. I thought this was normal?

As for high speed balancing the vibration is not speed-dependent but when driving slowly it's hard to detect unless I'm in a turn and let go of the steering wheel then you can clearly see the steering wheel hesitating while going back to the center position.

If the steering is locked there should be none...

When I had steering wheel funkiness back in the day of my 6th Gen AV6, it was a serious issue because one of the front control arms was loose and about to come off. Thank God it didn't while I was driving. I hope it's nothing as serious for you. You could also have your alignment checked?

Okay checked a few things today. No play at any direction if the steering wheel is locked.
Inspected the links under a lift and no signs of anything wrong from the last alignment.

Checked the wheels and tires for problems using a hunter roadforce machine and they look good. Very minimal balance adjustments.

Now I looked at the centering rings again and looks like they're not 100% fit. The wheel can still move like a couple millimeters around.

I got a new set of tires a few weeks ago but the same vibration wasn't there right after I left the shop. It felt fine for a few days until I went for an alignment. The next day I can feel this thing.

I'm still using the same old wheels but the tire size is different. Used to be 225/50-17 and now 225/45-17. Could it be that the shimmy was already there before but was less felt with a taller sidewall??

Since I can't find anything wrong in the linkage I'll just have to wait for the new rings to arrive and give it a shot. Any good ideas on how to remove the aluminum rings? The last time I wanted to use the stock wheels I had to open the rotors to push the rings out, they wouldn't budge.

For removing the rings, get a cold chisle and sharpen it, a couple of good waks with a hammer and it will split the aluminum ring.:D

It's a forged aluminun ring! I don't think I can split it with a chisel! :rolleye2:

I guess I'll have to open all 4 rotors again :whyme:
