Ok, wife and I just bought an '04 Accord V6 EXL? Idk trim, not important. Automatic transmission. It has 140,000 miles on it. It has hesitation and kind of jerks between what seems like 2nd and 3rd gear. Not every time though. Its intermittent. It seems to be worse when I've been driving allot. Engine runs great so I think it's transmission related. I checked the fluid and it's brown. (Crap!) I have no idea about the maintenance record of the tranny. I'm guessing it's never been changed if it's brown.

I've heard that if you change the fluid and it hasn't been regularly maintained it's best to leave it alone, or face a total rebuild shortly after changing it. So let the age old debate begin. Everything I've read elsewhere has been 50/50.

Here is my dilemma:

1. Have it flushed and changed. I've heard this can stir up deposits and plug up the transmission.

2. Just drain the old fluid and put in new Honda ATF. Theory being not to stir up anything.

3. Leave it alone and drive it until it breaks. I'm of the opinion that if the fluid is brown, nothing good will come of not changing it. It's not cooling and lubricating.

I'm leaning toward option 2. Any advice or past experiences are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I would start with doing a drain and fill with Honda ATF. If you are doing it yourself then drain it and then add roughly 3 quarts Honda ATF and drive it around and then do the drain and fill 2 more times with driving around for a bit between each drain and fill for a total of 3 times which is about 9 to 10 quarts total. At that mileage you should also change the 3rd and 4th gear shift pressure switches. A "very" easy job and is about $80 for both switches internet price.

I believe your Accord will shift just fine after doing the above. Here is some additional reading for you.

Thank you Jaster! That's a really big help. I'll try it and let you know. I guess I need to get a book (like Chiltons or Haynes) on this car. Idk where the shift pressure switches are or the solenoid filters or how to change them. Thanks again!

Do a total of 3 drain and fills with Honda's new DW-1 ATF. It was originally meant for their new transmissions only but now they say it is fine in their older transmissons. Kind of a defacto admission that Z1 isn't a great ATF.
