For performance driving... Why is everyone trying to get a short shifter and overall shorten the whole stick?

There must be a reason why pro drivers have along stick....

The shorter the throw, the quicker you can release the clutch and get back on the gas.

As far as the pros go:
Nascar regulates how short your throws between gears can be
Dragsters have sequential gear boxes
Street course cars- sit in a true racecar that has an 'R' in its title- they have like 1" throws

If you dont have a short shifter yet GET ONE and you will understand. The day after my girlfriend drove my car for the first time, she went out and bought a shirt shifter for hers.

Well, I guess these arguments are true for drag racing but for anything with twisties the longer stick minimises the time your hand is off the wheel(can't control the car too well with 1 hand). Also, shorter throws require more effort.

In any case, the speed at which you can shift a synchromesh tranny is largely governed by the tranny in any case, regardless of how fast you try to move the lever.

What would be ideal(but out of our reach) is a short throw with a long stick.

Both the neuspeed and the comptech short shifters for the accord do not change the length of the shifter above the pivit point. What they do is extend the shifter below the pivot point. The result is the same height of the knob, with a shorter throw- which sounds like its exactly what your looking for.

Both the Neuspeed and Comptech short shifter require the same amount of effort. Short shifters for other cars make it a b*Tch to put it into gear.

yeah .. on the escort i drove .. his short shifter was soooo hard to put into gear .. i didnt know if i was in 2nd gear or not .. the next thing you hear .. grrrrrrrrrrrrrindszzzz .. opps haha ... but i got the hang of it within 10 minutes ..

Some short shifters are a little more "notchy" than stock.....I have the PSPEC(shorter shifter and shorter throw) on my 5th gen and more aggressive look and feel far out-weigh the loss of smother shifts from the stock shifter.....

Yeah, I guess I should've phrased better.

My question was why do a lot of people want to shorten the actual lenght?

shortening the actual length of the stick will shorten the throw even further when combined with an aftermarket kit.

I took about a half inch off the length in addition to adding the neuspeed kit. I did this by removing the alignment nut from the bottom of the knob. I then used a dremel tool to remove a sliver off the top of the threads. This allowed me to lineup the numbers up properly without the nut.
