Alright, I am new to the forums and I have read a few topics and stuff on the GTI's. So far I have seen/heard that the 1.8T takes upgrades better.

My question pretty much is which would be better:

1999 GTI VR6
/w supercharger OR turbo (whatever boost is best)
/w chip
/w any greddy exhaust
/w AEM intake

OR

2000-2003 GTI 1.8T
/w chip
/w exhaust
/w AEM exhaust

I dont kno all the companies and exact parts but in general which car would be better? Thx

I kno the VR6 doesnt come with a turbo. That is why in the list I put /w super charger or turbo. I was just curious which would run faster and harder with pretty much the same mods.

EDIT: I dont have enough money for the R32 right now especially if i want to mod it.

Also, anyone know what company makes decent chips for the GTI VR6?? I have seen a few but none that catch my eye as much as I want it to? thx alot

if you dont have much money, then i suggest getting a 1.8t. theyre cheaper to mod than the vr6 and can get a helluva lot of power with a chip and some bolt ons. from a 1.8 litre engine, their torque curve is to kill for.

if you have the loot, get the VR. there are a bunch of NA vr's runnig 12's and a ton running 13's. the fastest turbo vr's are running mid to high 9's, fully stripped w/ slicks. the 1.8t is a great motor but it wont be as fast as a VR6-T.
btw, the R32 is a VR6 blocked, just bored 2mm over and stroked. IMO, they are not worth the price, would rather get a TT quattro for that much loot...

Chips:
VR6- GIAC hands down
1.8T - depends on what you want and how much you want to spend
APR, Upsolute, Revo are the most common. IIRC upsolute is the only company
that actually solders in a new chip to the ECU, the others just flash it via the
OBD port...

thx alot man that gave me lots of information I can use. I dont have that much bank to spend but I think I will go for the VR6 and chip it, AEM intake, exhaust, and I would like to turbo or supercharge it.

Any suggestions on either a supercharger (VF Engineering, HF, any others) or turbo it? If you have a suggestion and u kno wat companies make the best for the buck then please say. I am looking for good torque for good low end speed and also a lil boost in top end for ****ers with more hp than I. Thx alot.

-If your on a budget, get the 1.8t, it has lots of mods available
-If like the sound of the vr6 and its awesome powerband its a must have, heres a sound clip of the 95 vr6 engine (sounds the same as the 96-04 vr6 engines) it sounds awesome ..... http://www.magnaflow.com/04sound/sportsound/vwinside.htm

-If you can afford an r32 you can afford an sti or an evo and i would pick the evo or sti over an r32 anyday.

If i were to choose between the vr6 and 1.8t i would definitely get the vr6, it has a very wide and akward powerband that is awesome to drive. Plus the engine is ear candy, with an exhaust id have to say that the vr6 is the best sounding 6 cyl out there.

Neuspeed has you send in your ecu to solder it, i had it done on my 99 beetle turbo.

hmmmm i have done work on the 1.8t it is a really kick ass motor, but yeah the VR6 offers more room to to do performance, and as far as the R32 goes whoever says it is not a VR6 is wrong, it is a VR6 its not the 2.8L they upped the VR6 to a 3.2 to get more power it is still a VR6, plus you can even twin turbo the VR6 seein as how is is dual exhaust manifold.

abd racing and bahnbrenner have some great stuff for either the VR6 or 1.8t, my friend has a 20th ann. GTI we put the 4 bar fuel press. reg. CAI, big bore turbo inlet tube, lower mounted intercooler tube ( a smoother piece of tubing goin to the intercooler), it is chipped, with a 3 in. down pipe and cat-back exhaust, with the tuboXs bypass valve, and he can keep up with and actually beat a 4th gen LT1 Z-28 camaro

It irks me highly that the MKV R32 didn't come in a stick. I love that car otherwise. As for VR6 vs. 1.8T, get a 24V GTI VR6 (2003+). 1999 VR6 is a 12 valve. 1.8T's might be more moddable, but have coil packs that explode. Best MKIV Volkswagen engine:

The new coil packs dont explode, older versions did, they fixed that problem about 4 years ago!
